The Ishida years (1980-1990) Upon CDB's
retirement in 1980, it was noted that the next
adviser would certainly have some big shoes to fill,
and that Beeson would be "a hard act to follow."
The Pepper Bough was fortunate enough to have
English teacher extraordinaire Patricia Ishida step
in, who quickly made her mark. Ishida brought a
wealth of talent and journalistic
expertise to the paper,
and continued unabated the
fine traditions set down during
the Beeson years. During her
ten years as adviser, the paper
continued to win awards,
bringing home the coveted
George Gallup award
from the Quill and Scroll society
of Professional Journalists several
years running, an award given
only to the finest school papers in
the country. Also during her years here Ishida became
active in the Inland JournalismEducation Association
write-offs. These are competitions that the staff members
go to and compete against other schools' staffs for
writing awards. The Pepper Bough staffs, under
Ishida's guidance, won many of these
competitions outright, solidifying Ishida's reputation
as one of the most technically and sylistically superior
Journalism teachers in southern California. Coming as
she was on the heels of the Beeson years, Ishida
carried forth the tradition of fine journalism at Colton
High with flying colors. Ishida turned over the reins of
adviser in 1990, and nowcontinues to work for the
district in the capacity of Resource Teacher at the
District Office.
