7 Brides for 7 Brothers play review
by Kelly Wheatley
May 26, 2000Colton High’s Trouper’s club ended this year with a bang. Directed by Joey Mercado and assisted by Stacey Jay, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers hit center stage for the annual musical production. The stage was set March 23-25 with a large turnout filling the Whitmer Auditorium each night.
As the lights began to dim and the curtain began to open the voice of the Adam Pontipee, played by senior Federico “Fedco” Zamora, rang out. The story begins with Adam on his way into town with every intention of finding and marrying a wife before he went back home. Surveying all of his options he sang, “Bless your beautiful hide” as he walked through the town. Adam then saw Milly, played by junior Melanie Ward, tasted her cooking and knew right then she was the one for him. After a quick proposal and a shaving, Adam and Milly were on their way to the Reverend’s to get married, and then on the road again back to the Pontipee house. Arriving at the house Milly is introduced to a messy house and Adam’s six brothers, Benjamin, Caleb, Daniel, Ephraim, Frank (Frankincense), and Gideon (yes the names are all from the Bible.)
It was soon concluded that Milly was there to just cook and clean. She adjusted to the routine quickly, cleaning up both the house and the brothers, realizing she had married into a very handsome family. They each soon to become curious about girls, in a lively song, “Going Courting,” Milly taught the boys about dancing and courting in just enough time for the social dance.
Matched with good manners and a clean shave the Pontipee brothers were ready to begin courting. Some town’s girls Milly had known came along and right away the brothers took notice. They then began to dance and it was as if Alice, Dorcas, Ruth, Liza, Martha, and Sara had found their perfect matches in the Pontipee brothers. After the social the boys didn’t understand this feeling they had inside, it was obvious they liked the girls. They were miserable and depressed; Adam came up with the solution he thought would fix everything. He had read about the sobbin’ women out of one of Milly’s books. So the Pontipees were off the drove into town and kidnapped each one of the girls, in a hope that they would win them over and get to marry their girls. On the way back they after echo pass they let the girls scream, causing an avalanche. They would now be stuck at the Pontipee house until spring. Milly found out what happened and was very disappointed, the brothers were made to sleep in the barn as long as the girls were there even Adam had to go. Resentful of this Adam left for the trapping cabin to wait out the winter. The long winter brought many surprises, especially the news of Milly being pregnant. The pass was soon opened and the town’s people were on there way to the Pontipee house, Adam also came back to his new little girl and had decided to take the girls back himself. At hearing this, the girls ran and hid, they were eventually found by their fathers and the Pontipees only one question was asked of the girls whose baby was heard crying in the house. All at once the girls answered “MINE”, and a shotgun wedding ended the story.
Although I did give away the ending the play is something you would have had to experience first hand. Full of comedy, suspense, and yes, even those teary-eyed moments Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was well casted and well acted. Each night the performance got better and gave you the feeling of being in the Pontipee house every time, in each song and line delivered. Over all there was never a dull moment. The cast and crew is deserving of every standing ovation received and more.

Carl Lewis visits CHS to promote donor awareness
by Jason (Dr.) Jones and Charissa Six
May 26, 2000“Thirteen people die every day and they shouldn’t,” replied Carl Lewis when asked why he thinks that people should donate their organs.
Carl Lewis, Jeffrey Marx, and Wendy Marx created the Wendy Marx Foundation for the Organ Donor Awareness Program after Wendy successfully had a liver transplant. They created this program to aware and inform the students of the importance of organ donning. “Probably the biggest hurdle is a lack of understanding of the actual issue. Awareness...Because there are so many different misconceptions out there that affect everyone’s decision to be a donor or not,” said Lewis.
Being a long time friend of Jeffrey, Lewis decided to become a part of the expedition, in 1989 when he found out that his good friend Wendy desperately needed a liver within twenty-four hours or she would die. This touched Lewis personally. Lewis then decided that he didn’t want to see anyone in his position again and thus got involved in the Organ Donor Awareness Program. “I have been approached over the years by many recipients and donor families. I get to interact with the community all the time, which is highly motivating,” said Lewis.
Being an Olympic track star has been an influence to Lewis in his involvement in the program. “Yes, the dedication influenced me because we are in a never- ending battle to solve this problem—the shortage of organ donors,” replied Lewis when questioned about the comparison of the influence of his athletic involvement in track to his involvement in the program. Lewis believes in this issue strongly and says that donating is the gift of life. “Being an Olympic athlete is the culmination of a long-term goal. It’s a very special oppurtunity—only a few can achieve it. I think there are a few things you can do in life to help inspire and motivate others when you’re gone. . . donation goes beyond motivation. This is saving lives.”
Lewis has made his charity work his hobbie. He is a very outgoing person. He is involved in various programs in which all of them are to the benifits of others. “First of all, my charity work. That is probably the biggest. I work, of course, with the Wendy Marx Foundation for Organ Donor Awareness. But I also spend a lot of time on Best Buddies, a program to help developmentally disabled people, and UNCF The College Fund. Those are many of my Charities.” Lewis says that he will stay involved with the Awaeness Program until there is no longer a need for a transplant list. “I’m going to get more involved with the charities I mentioned, especially organ donor awareness until there is no longer a need for a transplant list. I’ll also get more involved in reaching people about fitness— their own personal fitness.”
Lewis is very concerned about the well being of others’ lives and hopes that he can make a change and he hopes that we will by donating and becoming more involved. “Athletics asks you to go beyond yourself. I’m asking all of us—including myself— to go beyond ourselves and make yourself a part of the solution to this problem. We can change this situation. We must change it.”
Cinco de Mayo Week
by Connie Villagrana and Brenda Quintero
May 26, 2000Cinco de Mayo week almost came and went with out notice. With testing and the hectic schedule, few realized that it was a time to celebrate. . . but celebrate the school did.
The festivities started off with Monday’s Opening Ceremony held in front of the Counselors Office to reconize Counselor Fran Ochoa-Smith as “La Mujer,” a recognition as the Hispanic Woman of the Year. Tuesday’s lunch activities, which were to be class competitions, were surely enough canceled, but Wednesday’s carnival was like a stress reliever from all that testing. Being the last carnival held for the year, many clubs went out to represent and have fun, showing off the great food they had to sell.
Thursday was Career Day and M.E.Ch.A. had invited some guest speakers to come and introduce themselves to a couple of classes and tell us a little about their careers. Friday was the spectacular Cinco de Mayo event held in the Auditorium during 3rd period, where a plaque was given in honor of Ochoa-Smith and the Cinco de Mayo court was introduced. The Princes: Pierre Fero, Jorge Unda, Victor Ramon and Federico “Fedco” Zamora;the Princesses: Karen Venegas, Jenaya Calderilla, Laurianne Serrano and Denice Aruiza. This years Cinco de Mayo King and Queen were Kenny Jordan and Joanna Salazar. Congrats to the both of you!!
Salazar surprised everyone by singing “Tu” by Shakira. Then the Ballet Folklorico de Guadalupe presented several traditional Mexican dances. Christy Casillas also sang a theme from one of her favorite bands “La Banda El Recodo.” The assembly came to a close with Alma singing two Mariachi songs, “Amor Eterno” and “Oooooooooooo”
Cinco de Mayo was celebrated with many festivals throughout the Inland Empire showing us how the Latin spirit is still alive, especially here at Colton High.
Is Summer here?
by Renee Negrete
May 26, 2000
Is summer here? Yes, summer is just around the corner. What are your plans for this summer? Aren’t sure? Haven’t decided? So what are you waiting for? Start making plans now! There are many things you can do this summer and many places to go. Here are some things Colton High students have planned for this summer.
Latisha Felix, sophomore, said this about her plans, “I plan to travel to Spain this summer.” “I plan to go to Hawaii to help my aunt with her newly opened restaurant,” said sophomore Angelica Miranda. “I plan to go to France to learn and understand the lauanguage,” says sophomore Linda Tovar.
You don’t have to travel around the world to have fun this summer. You can stay here and still enjoy your summer. That is what sophomore Kristi Trinidad is planning to do this summer. “I plan to go to La Jolla Shores to practice my surfing.” Veronica Lopez, a Colton High sophomore, has plans to go Jet Skiing at Lake Havasu. Lopez says this about her plans, “I plan to enter a jet ski race competition and win.”
Besides having a good time, many Colton High students have plans to attened summer school. Others are going to get summer jobs- some will do both- to save money for whatever they need.
Whatever you decide to do, make the best of it and have lots of fun.
Prom 2000
by Steve Perez
May 26, 2000“Stairway To Heaven”. For many juniors and seniors Prom 2000 (held April 29 at Royal Vista Country Club) lived up to its theme. The night included four hours of fun, excitement and reminiscing, with a surprise fireworks show highlighting the night. Albert Davalos and Jaylin Boyd were named King and Queen respectively.
The Country Club provided food, a carriage ride, and two dance floors; one upstairs (inside) and one downstairs (outside). Thus students could choose between the club-like atmosphere of the inside, or the cool, country feeling of the outside. The wide variety of music played included hip-hop, deep house, techno and salsa. The last song, Vitamin C’s “Graduation”, brought many juniors and seniors to tears as they realized their high school years were coming to an end. Students wishing to view the fireworks show packed the balcony at 10 pm.
Prices for pictures ranged from $30 to $85. Four photographers (all located outside) allowed for relatively short picture lines; a luxury not present at past proms.
Prom court was introduced on Wednesday during both lunches in the quad. A brief statement was given on behalf of each student. Runners up for Queen included Aubrianne Negrete, Diane Keeling, Kathleen Garcia, and Lorissa Vega. Runners up for King were Darron Pinkney, Brian Parsons, Chris Carey and David Alaniz. Voting took place by Juniors and Seniors during the week.
Summer Jobs tips
by Celeste Escobedo
May 26, 2000
This summer, many Colton High seniors will be looking for jobs. There are many reasons why it’s a good idea. Seniors who have never had a job need a way to pay for college, assuming that they plan to go. Juniors, as well, need to save money for the many senior expenses to come in the future.
Teenagers can get many jobs. You can see the “now hiring” signs on the windows of fast food places and retail stores that will need more employees during the summer.
Here are some tips for you if you plan to go job hunting. First of all, it’s a good idea to be dressed in a professional manner. This way, if the manager is the person that hands you the application, he will see that you will take the job seriously and professionally. Along with that, you’ll make a good first impression. After you have completed, signed, and turned in the application, wait for a call back. If you are interested and have not been called back, you should call the place where you applied to check the status of your application within two weeks.
If you have a resume or a completed senior portfolio, you should have it with you for the interview. You will look prepared and professional. The interviewer would be able to learn about you from what he reads.
To be able to work in the United States, legally, you must be at least 16 years old. Once you get a job, you will need to get a work permit from the career center. You can get high school credits if you work while attending high school. In order to find out more, ask about the work experience program in the career center.
College is Better (Both sides Now)
Joanne Flores
May 26, 2000
When deciding whether or not to go to college or join the work force it’s an easy choice. Unless you plan on going to work for McDonald’s with that high school education. It’s as plain as day. College prepares you for the work that lies ahead. I know people can say that you can work for the money to attend college but what about scholarships, loans, and not to mention grants? It’s sound simple and to tell you the truth, it’s just as easy. I know people say that if you stay in one job, you can move up that corporate ladder, but if you have no further education someone with some kind of degree can just walk right in that office with that degree from college and get the job for one reason and one reason only: they have the education that says they can handle that position. In some businesses, it’s a law to have people in certain positions with certain degrees.
If you were the employer and you have someone who’s been working for you for some time now and they’re up for job that you think they can handle, but at the same time you have someone with a college education and some recommendations from some internships applying for the job. Who would you hire? It’s easy: the one who has the education and knows what has to be done. I’m not saying don’t get a job and go to college, but college is a place that will eventually lead and prepare you for the real world it gives you an ideal look of how it’s going to be. College gives you the know how to find the right job and give you that job that will either lead you to happiness or money or even both. Going straight to a job most likely means you have to just stay there and yeah, it might be fun for awhile but you eventually will grow out of it and realize that it’s too late and that all the other employers want someone with a college education.
So to make my point plain and simple, COLLEGE PREPARES YOU FOR WORK.
Work is better (both sides now)
Amy Carrillo
May 26, 2000
A job—that extra activity that teaches responsibility and diligence pays off, and depending on where you work, you could be bringing home a little extra cash. In high school, job opportunities are endless. Teens can get jobs anywhere from being a hamburger flipper at McDonald’s to a checker at Stater Brothers’. But what’s wrong with not going to college and staying in the work environment? Nothing at all. Think about it . . . in the time that it takes you to get a college diploma, you could have already climbed up the corporate ladder and be in a more esteemed position. Some people perfer a life of hard work in a less cut throat buisness enviornment then let’s say, lawyers. What some people want to do for a living, doesn’t even require a college diploma.
Sometimes once you do get in a good position, you have job security and raises come along, and you aren’t going to want to leave and go start all over again by going back to college. There are always those instances where somebody doesn’t know what they want to do with their lives. Getting a job, gives you the opportunity to explore several different job opportunities, to see what it is that you like and don’t like. This way you experience it before you finish your major and then decide that you don’t really like what you are doing.
If you can’t exactly afford to go to college, a job is pretty much, well, the only way to go. Even if you do want to go to college, you can save your money so that later on you can afford to go to college.
Whether or not you decide to go to college or not pretty much well depends on whether or not you are determined enough to follow through with this major commitment. If you are one of those people who do want to go to college, or want to get started in the workplace, then there is no way to change your opinion, but it is ultimatly up to you.
Good Girls Bad Boys
Connie Villagrana and Brenda Quintero
May 26, 2000
Do you ever find yourself wondering why that sweet, smart, innocent girl in your English class, always helping others, is going out with that never-go-to-school, always partying drunkie? It doesn’t necessarly have to be in those same exact words, but it’s not that unusual to see this situation in the everyday lives of high school students.
There’s a saying that opposites attract, but is that just a myth or a reality?
In most cases this is a reality. So called “good girls” are mostly attracted to bad boys for various reasons. These reasons basically come from the type of life the girl is living. For example she could be a school girl and/or a church girl, never disobeying her parents and someone who wouldn’t even know what street life is about. When out of nowhere this guy comes into her life and she becomes extremely attracted to him; but why, if he is rebellious and totally opposite of her?
Probably because he is so different from her everyday life and exciting. She loves experienceing new things and that seems to be the best way. Good grades and an innocent personality becomes monotonous after awhile. This “bad boy” can be a way of expressing her longing for a change of life style. You know how they all say that deep inside of all of us there’s an inner bad side in which some people don’t know how to express themselves and maybe this is just a way for these girls to show a part of it.
Some may say that the reason a “good girl” would want to go out with a “bad boy” is to show off. Especially to friends, letting them know that you may not be the person you appear to be and I bet that would bring a big smile across anyone’s face. Another reason a “good girl” likes to be around a “bad boy” is because it’s a way to rebel against your parents and declare your independence, definately pissing them off!
Whether you appear to be a bad girl in the inside or the out, your decision to be with a “bad boy” is your way of expressing yourself.
Letter to the Editor: Pepper Bough, you got it wrong!
submitted by Ron Perez
May 26, 2000
RE: “IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THINGS, HERE’S HOW” (Staff Editorial published in your last issue)
When we read this particular article, we were upset at the fact that the staff of the Pepperbough found it necessary to not completely research this topic before its publication. We are also disappointed how the Pepperbough thought it was essential to cleverly insult students that try to make changes for CHS. Whoever delivered this information to you was biased and was not aware of the facts. This letter is to notify you of all the details pertaining to this article and to enlighten you on how we feel on the subject.
In the article it says, “The district tells us the dress code was necessitated because of gang activity.” However gang activity was not the only factor in the creation of the dress code. There are safety issues, as well as, concerns pertaining to distractions in the classrooms. The article also refers to “the great walk out of ‘97”, which was movement started by the senior class of ‘97, and doesn’t have anything to do with the Colton High school of today. Another misunderstanding in your information is the credit Bloomington was given for the consideration of a change in policy. We are not trying to take anything away from the student organization at Bloomington SMAC. (Students making a change) we are simply pointing out that Colton High students have been diligently working towards the same cause from the beginning.
I feel that all the negative comments that were started in the previous article were totally unnecessary and wrong. When in fact the Pepperbough had no previous knowledge of the ongoing battle to change the dress code. In the future it would be wise to interview the people actually involved in the process.
In addition to the article it says, “We at the Pepperbough are not here to criticize, but to warn you how incapable the school board must think we are.” By putting all these unnecessary insults the insults in the article the Pepperbough is doing exactly that; criticizing! Furthermore the board does not think that Colton high Colton High School is incapable, they think that we are great students and that we do great things for this school and are very professional, and we have been complimented many times.
Ronald Perez, ASB President
Peircing the Veil
Jason Valenzuela
May 26, 2000
So, this is the last time I will write for this newspaper. In fact, this year is full of lasts for me. Graduation. It is on every senior’s mind.
The last time I will see some of my friends, go to my classes, and see my teachers. Want to know what? It scares me. People are scared of things that are different or unknown. The future is both these things. Looking back I figure that high school isn’t so bad. Oh crap, did I just write that? Well, sure there are things about high school that are really bad, but there are good things too. Hanging out with your friends, joking around, goofing off, mooching off your parents. Can’t find anything wrong with that.
I find myself both wishing that summer were already here, and dreading it. I want to move on, out of dull and boring classes, to get to the summer, which may be my last time around my friends. Sure, there will be other summers, other times to goof around. But this one will be special.
So I think about what I will and will not miss. I won’t miss the lack of bathrooms, boring classes, never having a locker. I won’t miss a lot of things about Colton High School. What will I miss? I’ll miss the one and only thing that makes Colton High special. The people. I’ll miss my friends and some of my teachers. I’ll miss hanging around, joking about things, and just wasting time with them. I have no School Spirit. I never have, there isn’t much to be spirited about. After all, the self esteem crap shoved down our throats over the years I find it was instead detrimental to my attitude about things. In the end, I find the reason that I made it out of this place alive is messing around with my friends, not any of the supposed help from this group or that.
So I come to the end. What do I have to say to the other classes? I have this to say: cherish your times with your friends. They are your true counselors, therapists, and even at times, teachers (whether by good example or bad). Realize that your time here, in the end, will seem short. In the end, you will miss something or someone, so have fun while you can.
Now to everyone I’ve offended over the years, I apologize. I apologize not for my actions but that you couldn’t see things a different way. Keep an open mind. And for the last time, good-bye.
Struggle for Elian
Celeste Escobedo
May 26, 2000
By now, every Colton High student has heard about the Elian Gonzalez controversy. Elian Gonzalez was the only survivor on a boat coming to the coast of Florida. The boy’s mother died, so he had been living with his relatives in Miami. On April 23, Elian was reunited with his father under the orders of United States Attorney General, Janet Reno. However, the boy must stay in the United States until a court decides Elian’s fate.
There is a mixed opinion about what should be done about the Elian controversy among students. Some students think that Elian should be allowed to stay in the United States. Others say that the boy should go back to Cuba, to be with his father. There are even some students that do not care about what the outcome of the controversy is.
First, lets look at what those students who think that Elian should stay think. They say that Elian should be able to stay here in the United States because he would have a better life here. They feel that the boy should not grow up in a communist government.
Many are opposed to Elian staying here in the U.S. They say that the boy should go back to Cuba to live with his father. Elian’s father and grandparents are still in Cuba. Many feel that the boy should not get special rights just because he is from Cuba. He is illegal and he should go back.
I believe that Elian Gonzalez should go to live with his father. Elian’s dad wants to take his son home. And his home is in Cuba. The boy’s father has his rights to keep his son. After Elian was taken from his relatives home, he looked happy with his father. If he stays here, he will not be with his father. In my opinion, Elian’s Miami relatives have exploited him. They are showing him to the media, so they could see how happy he is. Did you see the video clip of Elian telling his father that he does not want to go back to Cuba with him? In the video clip, it looks like Elian is saying and doing what one of the relatives is telling him to do. I hope that in the outcome of the controversy, Elian returns to Cuba to live with his father, but I am sure that both sides of the controversy want the best for Elian.
Seniors After grad plans
by Jason Jones
May 26, 2000The time is drawing near. High school is almost over and now it’s time for seniors to decide what they want to do after high school. These people will start a new life for themselves. Some will be going off to college, some will go on to the exciting experience of the Army, Navy or the Marines; and others will stay at home waiting for something to happen.
Despite all of this mayhem there are still some seniors out there who have a plan and know what they want to do after high school. Senior Darron Pinkney is one. After high school Pinkney will attend the California State University.
While there, he plans on majoring in business or computer science, so he can make a lot of money after he gets his degrees. Pinkney plans on being involved a lot in college by playing basketball or soccer. He also plans on coming back for some of the football games, and all of the boys varsity basketball games, so he can watch his brother Kevin and the rest of the team make the playoffs and go all the way.
While some are continuing their future in the sunny state of California, others are leaving their hometown for a new adventure; like seniors David Alaniz and Steve Connor. Alaniz says that he will be leaving to join the Army.
He will be stationed in Texas and plans to go through the necessary schooling and training to become a Ranger.
Connor is going to France for his mission of two years after high school, just like his brothers did before him. Although he is leaving his family, Connor says that he is going to have the time of his life and that hopefully, when he comes back, he will know how to speak French.
Senior Emily Sorensen will also be leaving to go to college, three weeks after graduation. Sorenson will be attending BYU for a full four years.
Although some people have their future intact, there has never been anyone more focused on his future than senior David Miller. Miller told me that he has a dream plan that goes something like this-”My good friend David Tafolla has inspired me to grow up and become a cafeteria lady, and specialize in Sloppy Josephs. After a couple of years in the cafeteria industry, I’m going to open up my own business that specializes in making the little clear plastic things on the ends of your shoelaces. Once I turn ninety and am a millionaire, I’ll marry a twenty year old blond bombshell that will use me for my money. But it’ll be alright because she will pleasure me.”
Well, high school is almost over for the class of 2000. I guess it’s time to make your decision about what you want to do after high school. And before you ask yourself about making that decision, ask do you feel lucky, punk?

May 26, 2000I, Jason Valenzuela, leave my sarcastic and procrastinationg ways to anyone lazy enough to claim them.

Senior Expenses
by Stephen Aguilar
May 26, 2000It must be calm and relaxing being a senior as the year winds down, right? WRONG! Although freedom approaches and new life awaits our seniors there are many things that need to be taken care of before the ever so elusive thing known as freedom can be achieved, and unfortunately freedom nowadays is costly.
“What can possibly be so costly about graduating?” is a question that many of you might be asking, well the truth of the matter is that there are many things that contribute to the costlyness of being a graduating senior.
For one there are those pesky senior dues that have to be paid off if you want to graduate, which are $45. Then there’s Grad-Night, another $55 down the drain. So far we’re at $90. There is also a year book that seniors tend to want to buy that’s $60. Another popular item that has many purchasers is a class ring, another $200 or so jump out of your wallet and into someone else’s hands. Prom also tends to attract a multitude of seniors, and that alone can cost a fortune, costing $55 a person, an that;s not including a suit (or dress), gas to get over there (or maybe a limo or rented car), and dinner.
So far costs of a graduating senior are over $500, but wait there’s more. People have to know that you’re graduating right? If you want them to then that’ll cost you as well. This year announcements cost seniors as little as $44.17 to as much as $200. “Why get them at all?” you might ask yourself, “They invite people to buy you a graduation gift” stated senior class advisor Edward Monroe, that’s a good enough reason for some to buy them and add to their expenses (or their parents’)
When it comes down to it graduating can cost $1000 or more for some seniors. This is something that juniors like me can look forward to, and seniors like the ones who paid all this can have nightmares about.
Senior Memories
by Lisa Humphrey & Stephanie Farrior
May 26, 2000There are many memories that you will make in your lifetime. Few will compare to those four years of high school, when you learn the true meaning of friendship and responsibility, while watching those around you begin to mature. For most of us, our Senior year is the one that will have the most impact on our lives. It is the final year when football games, dances, and parties will be the topic of discussion. Leaving all that behind, and begining to learn about independence will be a difficult transition, but there will always be those few years full of memories that have shaped your life forever.
Herewith we present some senior memories: some sad, some funny, but all to be remembered with a smile . . .
Venice Garcia
“My best memory from this year was when my best friend Gracie Chacon and I went to Newport Beach and stayed for the weekend. One night we went out and viedotaped people that were just coming out of the bars. We asked them to look at the camera and say ‘Happy Mardi Gras.’ It was so funny. Later that weekend we told people that we were from MTV’s The Tom Green Show. All the people got excited and started waving at the camera yelling ‘Hi Tom’. We even managed to get a cab driver to sing and dance to the Bum Bum song.”Brian Pope
“Best memory...is going to high school with my little brother. My worst memory would have to be ‘Wide-right’ (I missed the game winning field goal.)”Orville Bell
“My best memory was when I got to play the Star Spangled Banner in front of the whole school. I got the biggest applause ever! I felt a combination of surprise and also relief because it was over.”David Miller
“When I scored twenty-nine points against Pacific, best team in the county, and the last home game of my high school basketball career. Also the time I saw David Tafolla jump off ten steps on a skateboard while being chased by the police with hickory sticks. My worst memory was when I scored a touchdown, then fell into the track.”Kathleen Garcia
“My best memory was getting third place in the Nationals this year. My worst was that I bought a brand new Roxy bathing suit for the Nationals. I locked the hotel room and went to AM/PM. When I came back it was stolen! Don’t ever stay at the Sharaton in Anaheim!!! I don’t recommend it!”Albert Davalos
“When Ï first brought my drums to school, because everyone listened. I felt like I was bringing a new culture into the school.”Sean Hammer
“My favorite memory is the day in History class when we went to the library and Taylor Pettit pulled the chair out from under Kristina Wood. She fell on her butt and hit her head on the bookshelf, then got up and complained that her elbow was hurting. No one could stop laughing!!!”
Senior Staff Members Memories
May 26, 2000“ My fondest memory of my senior year was never coming.”
~Kathy Croy“ All good things come to an end and our moment has arrived, class of 2000 its time to say goodbye. I have shared many memories with friends at Colton HIgh, like going through drama with my best friend Tricia, having mad fun with Joseph Romero (and what...), and sharing laughs and smiles with many other friends. I’m going to miss you guys.”
~Rena Ramirez“ I don’t think I will ever forget all the friends that I have made over the years. All the fun I had working on the paper and running around the Sun building getting into trouble with Rena. Going on the AVID Road Trip. Meeting a lot of people at competitions with Academic comp. Having fun getting things together with M.E.Ch.A. These four years have been so memorable, I don’t think I will ever forget all the wonderful friendships I have made.”
~Karen Venegas“High school has gone so fast, but I can remember every time that I spent with my friends and I can even remember getting car sick going up the mountains and going bowling for the first time but most importantly all the friends I made throughout my high school years. Including all the ones I hope to continue even after we graduate. Now having those friends to keep way after high school that’s just special in it’s own way.”
~Joanne Flores“I just want to thank all my friends from Colton High and to Mr. Rainey for giving us this chance to express ourselves by writng in this newspaper. Hope the best for all the students and teachers.”
~Horacio Fregoso“ My first year in Journalism, Ameera Adams, Brenda Quintero, and Iwould bring in the newspaper every morning. By the end of the period we would end up throwing pieces of balled up newspaper trying to get the ink on eachothers faces.”
~Kelly WheatleyI would like to thank Mr. Rainey for the opportunity to put this senior section together as well as everyone who contributed to it. I would also like to thank my friends for putting up with me through my more stressful days, everyday, and my family, especially my mom, for always supporting me.
~ Karen Venegas
Glad to leave
by Kathy Croy
May 26, 2000When I first started at this school as a freshman, I followed every rule as written. I never objected to anything handed down by the administration because I believed that the rules they enforced were for my own good. But it seems that every year I’ve attended this school the rules have gotten more and more unreasonable, and my faith in the system has crumbled.
Freshman year was only the beginning. It all started when the age old senior privilege of off campus lunch was taken away. Sophomore year they attempted to remove our pep assemblies. Then junior year, gates not only surround the school, they now enclose the inside of the parking lot as well. The school is beginning to look more and more like a jail and student morale is depleting. And now it’s my senior year. And I’ll tell ya; I was not the least bit surprised to learn that gates now surround girl’s P.E. locker rooms creating an even more prison-like state. Sure they want to insure our safety. Sure it’s for our own good. I guess that’s why they take away CD players and cell phones at LUNCH time, when it’s NOT a classroom disturbance. They must be concerned about the cancer risks related with cell phones.
I’m sick and tired of the administration having rules that DON’T make sense. I recently got a dress code violation. This was the FIRST offense in all of my four years at Colton High. And you know what it was for? Wearing a shirt that had no straps on the shoulders. According to the dress code this is considered “sexually suggestive.” How degrading is that? Saying that if you wear something that shows your shoulder blades you’re now asking for sex? No cleavage was showing , no undergarments were visible, but because it was off the shoulders, well! It’s simply not allowed. The security guard even remarked, “just get a piece of tape or something and put it across your shoulders” Funny how that suddenly changes a shirt from being sexually suggestive to appropriate. I am not the only one who opposes the dress code. Even teachers find the dress code preposterous. Most teachers would rather continue with their lesson rather than have to act as a disciplinarian for the dress code that not even they agree with.
The school rules for the most part are petty and pathetic and I cannot wait to be on my own. When I go off to college, I won’t be interrupted on my way to class because my top is inappropriate. I won’t spend half of my lunchtime standing in an endless line because I’m not allowed to leave campus. And most importantly, I won’t HAVE to come to school at the butt crack of dawn and leave in the late afternoon. I will schedule my own classes and if the teacher is incompetent, I have the freedom to drop the class.
In a recent article in the Sun newspaper our own principal proclaimed that he would like to restore pride in our school, for when he attended Colton High in 1984, school was a spirited place to be. Well take a look around you: of course we don’t have spirit, we are prisoners in our own school. Even I, one who was once a wholehearted advocate for the school rules, have turned away in disgust. You can apply a new coat of paint to the gym, you can put soap and tissue in the bathrooms, but what you cannot fix is the disappointment I have towards my own educators. All I can say is: good bye gates. Good bye Dress code. Hello College.
Sad to grad
by Lexie Castell
MAy 26, 2000Well, of course I’m sad about graduating. After high school is over, the rest of my life is basically what I make of it.
The past 12 years of my life have been handed to me on a silver platter. My life has always been mapped out for me. (I guess what I’m mostly sad about is that my parents are making me get a job.) I’ll miss the old high school. Whether the past four years have been good or bad, the time I’ve spent at Colton are the times I will remember for the rest of my life. When I talk to people who graduated four or five years ago they always say how high school was the best time of their life because the teenage years allow you to get away with so much and live a carefree life. I’ll miss my friends; I mean, I’ve had the same friends since junior high and even elementary school. However, there are also some people I couldn’t care less if I never have to see again. In the end it really doesn’t matter anymore anyway. We will all be moving on and going in different directions in our lives. We probably won’t see anyone ever again unless we run into them at the local hang out...(Miguels Jr.) or at the store.
After high school everyone either goes away to college, moves away, gets a job, or stays at home and lives off of their parents for the rest of their life. What makes me sad the most is knowing that I’m not going to be a teenager much longer—call me Peter Pan but I never want to grow up. I look back on my past four years here at the old high school and I see how much everyone has changed and grown up. I can think of so many people that went from gangster to skater. I’ll miss the football games that were followed by Denny’s after hours. I’ll miss all the teachers I had through the years who always encouraged me and guided me through the ropes of high school. Just to send some of my teachers love. . .The coolest history teacher ever Mr. Gerard, Mrs. Lacy, Mrs. Preciado, Mrs. Yarbough, and Ms. Russell. You always treated me as more of a friend than an average student- thank you for allowing me to feel that way.
Little things make me sad about graduating: walking to the student parking lot to meet up with my friends and driving home; passing period; and the 4 different lunch tables I sat at evey year. One thing that I managed to pass with flying colors all through my high school years is the fact that I had to accept that there will always be “crap talkin’” and the two-faced people you love to hate. I think one of my favorite punk bands put it best when they said. . . “I graduate this class with honor...and I will never fail Drama!” (I passed that with no problem. I’m glad that I won’t have to deal with that any longer.) The friends, the enemies, the teachers, and, oh yeah, the school work, all taught me a lesson. I feel that it’s a good thing to have made mistakes in my life because in the end I will have learned something from that experience, and therefore I will be a better person. What I’ve learned is that sometimes you fail miserably and other times you come out successful. However, what counts is the way you live your life and the way you treat yourself and others. In the words of an old friend, “Life is full of experiences; therefore you must experience everything.” Good bye cruel world; keep on rockin’ on.

Christian Music
by Maya Minwary
May 26, 2000Contrary to popular belief, Christian music is not some outdated, boring hymns that people sing at church. Infact, “...for every secular kind of music, there are Chritian ones like it,” says freshman April Valenti. You name it, the Christian music industry has it, everything from Alternative, to ska, to rap, and R&B.
The Christian music industry is also not unknown. It is a billion dollar indusry, and the fastest growing music industry with a record sale increase of 33% last year. There are Christian radio stations, like the our local 90.1 Air-1, and Praise-TV (a sort of Christian MTV). Christian music, however, aren’t just exclusively air on only Christian stations, you, by chance, have probably heard a song or two from a Christian artist/band. Not too long ago I heard a couple of songs, by the Christian band Jars of Clay, played on The-X (103.9) and other secular radio stations. They also recently played at the Orange Blossom Festival in Riverside. Popular Christian bands like The O.C. Supertones, and MXPX, have also appealed to a wide scope of audience, not just Christians. P.O.D, a hard-core/punk band, were featured on MTV, and on the “Get Ready to Rumble” soundtrack. DC Talk, with their unique mixture of alternative, rap, and pop, have had several of their records go gold, or platinum/multiplatinum; have had several of their songs topping the charts; and out of all the other artists/bands out there, they were ranked in the top 10, and came in between Marylin Manson and Kiss. Did you know that Sixpence None the Richer is also a Christian band? “The concerts that I go too are like, the ones that other people go to...with just as many people, and [even] moshpits!” continues Valenti. Indeed there are just as many people. In a recent sold out Audio Adrenaline, and Newsboys concert, I saw just as many people there as there would be in a secular concert.
But don’t think that I’m here to tell you how much alike Christian music is to secular music. Yes, there are differences between the two. With the music industry, in my opinion, being so negative these days, Christian music offers an alternative to it.
When I asked Junior Heidi Alcantar why she listen to it, she replied,”Christian music is totaly glorifying God, and I’d rather listento music with a message of love, forgiveneness, and hope , than listen to music that focuses on man’s troubles and depending on his own ability to solve his problems”. So perhaps what’s so great about the Christian music industry is the message and ministry behind it. Christian music does not talk about sex, materialism, suicide, etc., to become popular, it doesn’t need to. Instead, it talks about what some people may consider corny: love, God, being happy, and other good things we can all relate to.
“If we reach them with the love of Christ then that’s something the world can’t give and...take away,” says Peter Furler, lead singer of the band Newsboys.
Things aren’t always what they seem. Christian music is so much more than just what people view as boring music.

Ginger or Maryanne
by Lexie Castell & Julie Connor
May 26, 2000Mary-ann and Ginger: two Ladies that set the standards of what a guy wants. The sweet and wholesome girl next door vs. the glam- adventure girl of every guys dreams per se. So what is it guys? It’s not so much a matter of which is better but more of preferance. Hypothetically speaking, if you were to be stranded on a deserted island with one girl, would you rather your days be filled with carefully prepared meals and quiet nights of star gazing, or wild adventures and exotic nights? We polled the population of males here at CHS to see just what it is they’re looking for. So just sit right back and you’ll here a tale . . . a tale of our fateful survey.
Out of guys interviewed, 60% of them say their dreams are full of Mary-ann. That’s right, the intellectual sweetheart who waits to give them back massages and ask about their day. Senior Brandon Moore says he’s noticed that, “Ginger-type girls are lazy. You just can’t trust them not to get with the profesor when you turn your head.” Senior Joey Romero agrees: “ My chick needs to have my food on the table when I get home from a hard day of Stater’s. I also need someone I can wake up next to who doesn’t have to run to the bathroom to put on make-up.”
So why are we girls so worried about maintaining the image of the perfect girl who always re-applies make-up at the end of every class and never has chipped nail polish? Senior Johnny Padilla comments, “If I were stuck on a deserted island, I would choose to be stuck with Mary-ann, because although she looks innocent, everyone knows the quiet ones are the wild ones.”
On the other hand, the remaining 40% of guys argue that Ginger-type girls are the only way to go. Junior Oscar Garcia says that dating and seeing people is all about having fun. “The quiet girls are always the psychopaths in the end.”
Senior Andrew Dzieman agrees: “I like Ginger because although neither her or Mary-ann had brains, at least she had something to offer.” All the guys who prefer Ginger admit that it’s just something about the experienced girls who know what they want and know how to get it. Junior Jason Jones said, “My chick has to be sexy. People who say that looks aren’t important probably don’t have them.” Junior Seth Purcell nods in agreement while winking at a passing classmate, “Yeah, I like the wild girls who act crazy. Sure there’s not much to them but as long as I’m having fun that’s all I’m concerned about.”
So guys, whether you have a certain Mary-ann or a certain Ginger in mind, as long as you have common interests you can probably make it work. If not, at least make sure you never go out to sea in a leaky boat.
Tanning
by Kathy Croy
May 26, 2000Summer’s here and you know what that means: Time to show some skin! That whitish figure you’ve been hiding all winter is going to be exposed and who wants to be the last one on the beach with pasty white thighs, right? Well just in case you live under a rock I’m here to tell you that you may be getting more than you bargain for when you tan that hide this summer on those lovely sandy shores.
You’ve all heard it over and over again: Skin cancer! But do we really pay attention? Nope. Perhaps it’s because most of us don’t really think it will happen to us, and that this is the only serious consequence of tanning. Well, we’re wrong. There’s basically three types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. Basal and squamous cell cancers occur on the parts of your body that are most exposed to the skin, such as your forehead, face, and ears. Good news: If caught early enough this type of skin cancer is easily treatable. Bad news: the treatment can be pretty costly and even worse, can live hideous scars on the treated area. But there’s bigger things for you to worry about. Melanomas are much more dangerous considering they tend to show up on areas of the body that you don’t usually expose all year long, like your back, thighs, or feet. See, unlike other cancers, melanomas can spread easily all over the body and there’s no good treatment available at present time.
Some beach-goers seeking the perfect tan have turned to tanning beds in hopes that it lowers their chances of skin cancers. But although considered by many to be a safer alternative to direct sunlight, tanning beds can be just as dangerous. The lamps used in tanning salons emit mostly ultraviolet A (UVA) light, as opposed to the more harmful ultraviolet B (UVB) light found in natural sunlight. Still, frequent exposure to UVA can cause serious damage to the skin. UVA can penetrate deeper into the skin, destroying supporting skin fibers and damaging the skin’s elasticity. Your result? Beautiful pre-matured, wrinkled and leathery skin early on in life. Not to mention long term injuries to the eyes. Those of you who have light skin and blue eyes must be especially careful this summer, for experts have determined that those with these traits are nine times more susceptible to skin cancers than those of darker complexion.
So be careful when hit those beaches (or tanning beds!) this summer, you risking more than tan lines. Wear sunscreen rated greater than 15, cover up as much as possible, and avoid the sun from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Just remember; before you bare— BEWARE!
Teachers in Bands
by Charissa Six & Amy Yarnall
May 26, 2000The stereotype of a teacher: a person who we assume has no other life outside of standing up in front of the class while lecturing our brains out. It’s totally up to the person, but the majority of students want a teacher more like themselves.
JOSE CALDERON
Wearing a t-shirt with Ford Woody’s on it, jeans and green shoes, Jose Calderon claims “I was once called a musical genius.” Calderon is the lead vocalist and guitarist for Johnny Cheapo; that is screaming with punk rock tendencies, but as Calderon puts it “it’s just good rock-n-roll.”
Johnny Cheapo, says that the band acquired its name from his “mom... no just kidding...someone called me cheapo one day and I thought it sounded cool.” Johnny Cheapo, a four member band whose vocals are acutely heard in their new CD “Say Hello To Disaster.”
Calderon, like a lonely, weary traveler at a bar explained that he’s “almost toured this whole country.” He loves being out on the road- believing that nothing compares to living on the open range. His previous band, Fitting Cause, was heard around the world. One fan from Italy said “Next to my Descendants, you’re my favorite band.”
All in all Calderon is a lover of good songs, good songwriting and especially the fabulous Ramones. Johnny Cheapo who occasionally will play a gig at a bar for beer can also be seen playing at the Glasshouse in Pomona. Calderon sees himself as a person infatuated with “good rock-n-roll.”LUCY KHAIRULLAH
What do you say when you discover that the English teacher you have is the leading vocalist for a band called Blackboard Jungle (B.J)? Reactions, though they may vary amongst the staff, are positive and supportive from her students.
Blackboard Jungle is a name that was taken from the actual movie Blackboard Jungle with Sidney Poitier. Khairullah’s band consists of her as the lead vocalist, Sarah Huartesek as the bass player and two men who take on the role of guitarist and drummer.
B.J. generally “gets booked on alternative nights,” playing cover songs such as “Come Undone’” by Duran Duran, “You shook Me,” by AC/DC—but “absolutely, I’d like to play more of my music...” says Khairullah, “but you have to please the audience”
Every band has their conflicts but the biggest one that B.J. has is finding the right bassist. Currently a chick plays the role, but in previous times male bassists have come and gone in a flash.
Music has always found a way into Khairullah’s life whether it was at her family parties, where Khairullah says, “I have a lot of aunts and uncles and they had a mariachi band, so at any family anything they were always playing.” Influenced by her mother’s wide range of musical interests it’s no surprise where Khairullah gets her “bubbly” attitude says, senior Daniel Ilgenfritz.
With music lessons as early as five years old, singing in the worship band at church, and her ability to play the guitar, her wide range of capabilities defines her as a definite asset to B.J.
Khairullah says, “ No matter what you do in life you should make it inclusive, you should open your eyes.” Being a teacher, a mom, and playing in Blackboard Jungle, has certainly done this for her.Michael Parshal
Talk about a teacher with similar interests! How would you like to have green Kool-Aid at your wedding? Well, teacher Michael Parshal, bassist and vocalist for his band Conspiracy of Thought, agreed with his wife-to-be that they didn’t care for wine, and went with Kool-Aid.
Michael Parshal, 29, named his band Conspiracy of Thought, C.O.T. for short, because this three member band wanted to convey messages to the audience about real life situations, other than the usual songs about girls, being depressed, etc. Instead, they “talk about what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and how to change things.” With most of the lyrics written by Ben Stewart, the guitarist, and drums by Troy Lewis, C.O.T. put out their second CD called “American Dreams.” Parshal says that C.O.T. wanted to follow the general path of the well known band Rage Against the Machine, which is, “what Zack says on stage is how he lives his life as well.”
C.O.T. made their debut in L.A. about five years ago. “We felt like a real band! We had a stage and everything. It felt really cool.” Parshal looks back on it now and laughs as he realizes how “cheesy” and simple their goals were.
Now, five years later, they have six gigs this month—one of which was a free concert with many other local bands on May 20 at Pharaoh’s Lost Kingdom. Parshal, husband and father, says, “it’s hard to find time within the family.” No matter what, C.O.T. has agreed to limit their performances to California. However, when asked how far he was going to go with the band, he states, “as far as I can go.”
Battlefield Earth Movie Review
by Steve Ramirez
May 26, 2000The “science fiction thriller” Battle Field Earth directed by Roger Christian was horrible. The movie was based on the proclaimed unreadable book written by L. Ron Hubbard in 1982.
The movie takes place in the year 3000 and human beings are an endangered species due to the aliens called Psychlos, taking over the earth. The earth is wiped out of practically everything and is totally barren. There is not much story so I will move on.
In the movie there was not enough information provided for it to even make sense. It jumped from scene to scene leaving the viewer confused and wondering what happened. The movie fails to provide a climax and seems to constantly be on the downfall. Through out the movie there is no action whatsoever, (except for a few explosions at the end) therefore being boring and hardly ever interesting.
There are some pros to these many cons, to be exact, just one. That is John Travolta, a great actor who gives a good performance as Terl, the head Psychlo. Although he is the “bad guy” he is the only character the viewer can somewhat enjoy.
When it all boils down in the end, this is an awful movie. It recieved zero stars on a four star scale! Do not go see this movie, not even when it is for rent for 99 cents for five days. Don’t waste your time or money on this movie.

A new girl pop group called M2M has an album called Shades of Purple. Their first album consists of poppy love songs such as “Don’t Say You Love Me” and “Mirror Mirror”.
Although their album is a typically pop, these two Norwegian girls, Marit Larsen and Marion Raven, write most of their songs. The songs seem to stick in your head all day. You find yourself singing to “Mirror Mirror” and beat yourself up in trying to remember the words to “Don’t Say You Love Me.”
This album is one of those you have to listen to a couple times to like the WHOLE album, but once you start to know the words and the beat, you won’t be able to stop singing. They have been featured on the Disney Channel’s concert special.
Some other songs on the album are: “Girl in Your Dreams”, “Why”, “Pretty Boy”, and “Don’t Mess with my Love.” The Shades of Purple has that pop sound, and when you listen to it you feel like your in elementary school all over again, but no one every said that it was a bad thing. If you’re into pop, corny love songs, and KIIS FM music, this album is definitely for you.

NO DOUBT
ALBUM REVIEW
05/26/00Return of Saturn is the long awaited third album from pop-ska band No Doubt, which formed thirteen years ago in sweet, sunny Anaheim, California, playing the local clubs in hope of fame and fortune with their mad ska beats with horns and keyboards.
This is the return of the band from a five year absence since their last album, the multi-platinum monster Tragic Kingdom, which made No Doubt very popular with their hit tracks “Just a girl”, “Spiderwebs”, and the song that made theme known world wide: “Don’t speak”.
Not disappointing thier multitude of fans, No Doubt is back with thier hot new CD Return of Saturn, bringing fourteen brand new songs of rock, ska, pop, and great lyrics all rolled into one great album . The band admits to taking a long time to record the album, but it’s well worth buying.
single “Ex-girlfriend”, Return of Saturn debuted at number two on the charts (due to record breaking sales from a lame boy band called *NSYNC) but not bad for a band who hasn’t made an album in five years. Of course the album has many more great songs, like “Suspension without suspense”, “Too late”, “New”, and “Staring problem.” So if you want to listen to some good music, then you want Return of Saturn from No Doubt, ‘cause if you like the last album you’re gonna love this one.

ROAD TRIP
MOVIE REVIEW
05/26/00
When you accidentally send a homemade porno tape to your girlfriend, what do you do? “Road Trip!”
A story about five University of Ithaca legends told by Barry Manalow (Tom Green). The story starts off with a tour of Ithaca, with Barry as the tour guide. Barry spices up the tour with his colorful story about his five friends. Josh (Breckin Meyer), takes a chance, and blows off a study session for a test that determines his existence at Ithaca, and goes to a party. This is where he makes the huge mistake of filming his one night stand with Beth (Amy Smart), a fellow Ithaca student.
The next day Josh finds out that his roommates sent the tape to Joshes childhood sweetheart, Tiffany (Rachel Blanchard). Josh Freaks out and decides that nothing is too daring to retrieve the tape before Tiffany sees it. This is where the fun starts. Josh, E.L. (Sean William Scott), Kyle (D.J. Qualls), Rubin (Paulo Caustanzo) take off for the adventure of a lifetime. On their way to Austin Texas, they pull off every trick in the book to complete their mission. Their stunts range from stealing a blind school’s bus, to crashing frat houses. What happens to the mystery tape? That’s something you’ll have to find out on your own.
Road Trip was a hilariously funny movie, well worth your time and money. Tom Green really outdoes himself here; so if you’re a fan of his MTV show, or even if you’re not, go see this movie.

SUMMER MOVIES
05/26/00
We all love summer for our own reasons. Some (well, probably all) because we’re out of school. Some because it means no more getting up before the sun rises. Some because it means all you have to do is hang out with your friends. I love it for all those reasons and more, but one of the biggest reasons is the movies. And this summer looks like it’s gonna be good when it comes to movies. So, since it wouldn’t be fair to not let you in on it all, here are some of the what looks to be the summer’s biggest, most popular, most anticipated films.
The summer movie season officially starts in May, but the first film that will probably start raking the summer movie bucks first doesn’t come until May 24. On that day, the much-awaited Mission: Impossible 2 comes out, obviously featuring Tom Cruise, and this time directed by action movie pro John Woo. Once again, Cruise is thrown into a dense plot involving a deadly chemical agent that he must protect as his team mates begin dying off, one by one.
Gone in 60 Seconds hits theaters on June 9. Featuring Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie, 60 Seconds is the story of a group of master car thieves who agree to pull a major, fifty-car heist to help out a friend. With tons of car wrecks and chases, it looks to be very entertaining.
Shadow of the Vampire, which chronicles the making of the classic film Nosferatu, comes out on June 16. In it, Willem Dafoe portrays the actor that begins to get into his role of a vampire a little too much. Samuel L. Jackson will be strutting onto the big screen on June 16 in Shaft Returns. A remake of the classic Shaft blaxploitation films, Samuel L. plays a bad mo-fo who’s gotta head to Harlem to find his boss’s kidnapped daughter. If you don’t find vampires and baaaaad mutha’s interesting, but are all for animated films, don’t fret. You still have a reason to be out on the 16th of June. Titan A.E. arrives in theathers this day as well. A computer and traditionally-animated film, it features the voices of Matt Damon, Drew Barrymore, and Bill Pullman. In it a young man named Cale must find a mysterious ship called the Titan, which may hold the secret to saving mankind. Mankind needs saving because, as always, some alien race has come along and destroyed our planet, hence the A.E. in the title (After Earth...get it?).
On June 30, the long-awaited film The Perfect Storm will be released. It is based on the true story of the Andrea Gail, a ship that went down with all hands in one of the worst freak tropical storms of the century. George Clooney is the star in the center of the computer-generated storm.
Probably the single most anticipated film of not just the summer, but of many many years, is X-Men. Well, finally, someone got around to making an X-Men movie, and it’ll be hitting theaters on July 14, with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Anna Paquin. We all know the story of the X-Men, but for the three people that don’t, here it is: In the near future, some humans have been born with genetic differences that give them super-human abilities. Some of them have banded together to form the X-Men, under the supervision of the psychic Professor X. Their goal is to protect humanity from the arch-villain Magneto. This film looks like it’s gonna take in tons of money, because everyone who’s ever liked the X-Men will be there, plus those that just saw the effects-packed trailer.
For those who want something a little more gritty and visceral, wait until July 28. Hollow Man will be in theaters on that date. In it, Kevin Bacon plays a scientist who’s created a drug that can render a person invisible. He tests it on himself, and finds that it works perfectly. The only problem is it drives people crazy. As he starts to realize more and more that had can do whatever he wants while invisible, he slips more and more into madness. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, of Starship Troopers fame, the film is ultra-gory and not for the light of heart. But for the rest of us, it looks like an interesting film.
Finally, if you want a little comedy, The Legend of Bagger Vance comes out on August 18th. It is the story of a WWI veteran who becomes a golf pro, and finds himself trying to win a famous tournament with the help of a caddy named Bagger Vance. It stars Matt Damon and Will Smith. Well, that’s the biggest and the best that are set to come out this summer. There’s a ton more, but I don’t really have the room. But be sure to keep your eye on the marquee, because these next few months will definetly have a ton of eye-candy for your atrophying brain. I hope you enjoy them all. I think I’ll just go get in line now.
Tattoos and Piercings
by Megan Reiter
May 26, 2000Tattoos and Piercings. We’ve all seen them on friends around campus. Perhaps we’ve even considered having it done to ourselves. But questions invade our minds: Will it stereotype me into what I’m not? Is it safe? Does it hurt? Will my parents hate me? Is it something worthwhile? Is it attractive? Studies aren’t the only thing students worry about—they also stress out about the way they are perceived.
Being looked at as something you’re not is the worst feeling ever. Most teens are stereotyped alot by most people that aren’t from this generation. Things have more meaning and they relate to certain feelings. This is such a common thing now a days.
Being safe is a major priority to everyone’s life. The major motto for most of the teens here at Colton is to live life to the fullest. Therefore most teens want to get all their desires done while they’re young. Any type of needle going through the skin can’t be safe or normal by far, but it’s becoming a part of every day life. Every where you look you see tattoos and piercings; while wondering if it hurt, how much it cost, and mainly, is it safe?
Safety is one thing the tattooists and piercers worry about the most. Keeping everything sterile and knowing if the person has any problems with their body such as a blood disease or if the persons is allergic to any thing helps with safety. Being able to know the person first before starting to tat/pierce away helps keep things safe. That’s why most professional piercers and tattooists have the customers fill out a questioner/waver type thing.
One major risk of piercing is infection. Infection can be very gruesome and can cause a lot of pain. If an infection spreads and gets real bad it can cause a person to lose part of their ear or can severely paralyze a tongue if it hits a major vein. Maybe a loss of a body part. This is a very serious thing. If not done right it can take a turn for the worst. To keep a piercing from getting infected, cleansing it with the right products would be the best thing.
With a navel ring, not taking care of it can lead to blood poisoning. “Body piercing is not an innocuous cosmetic procedure to be undertaken lightly,” says a doctor from UCLA’s school of medicine. On another note: Dentists everywhere are seeing an ever-growing number of fractured teeth due to the practice of tongue piercing.
Being able to take obsessive amounts of pricking of a sharp object or a very quick jab of a hollow needle is something most people can deal with. Almost all of these people state the same thing over and over again: “It doesn’t hurt at all. Its so quick for a piercing and when the tattooing gun hits certain spots it gets a little sensitive but other than that its a piece of cake.”
“My parents just called me dumb, they thought ...my tongue was gonna fall off,” says senior Lexie Castell, who has her tongue pierced. Some teens get tattoos and piercings to be rebellious and make their parents mad. Some do it for the love of pain. Some like the way it looks with their fashion type. For example, “In the 80’s, punk rock kids use to get piercings because it went along with the whole punk scene....For punk rock kids, piercing is just a way of life.”
Being able to live with what you did to your body is something that the fellow teens have to deal with if they like it or not. Whether it leaves a scar or if its permanently there they have to live with it. Some people think that some piercings/tattoos look good only on certain people. “It fits only some personalities. It’s an expression and I love it.” says senior Lorissa Vega with a big smile.
Tattoos and piercings are something that people are learning to cope with. It’s so popular that people are immune to seeing it. It means so much to so many different people but it can cause serious damage if not properly done or cleaned. Being aware of what can happen is something that the teens at Colton high are. Tattoos/Piercings need to be taken seriously.
Concert of Summer preview
by Lexie Castell
May 26, 2000
While most people this summer will find themselves baking in the summer sun on the beach, I on the other hand will be baking in the heat of the mosh pits. The great thing about summer concert shows is that most of them are placed in an out doorsie festival type atmosphere which adds to the summer season. So let’s talk about a personal favorite summer concert of mine...The VANS WARPED TOUR 2000. This annual event is one of the best around and as an alumnae of this festive show I would say if you have a love for punk music then Warped Tour is the show for you. Warped Tour this year will be held at three different venues in Southern California: The Arrowhead Pond parking lot in Anaheim on Thursday June 29-30, Coors Amphitheatre parking lot in San Diego on June 24, and Seaside Park at Ventura County Fairgrounds on Wednesday June 28.
This year’s line up is probably the best one yet. Green Day will be headlining along with NOFX who will be rippin out jams with songs from their new album “Pump Up The Valium.” Other main stage acts include Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Suicide Machines, Long Beach Dub Allstars. Also appering will be MxPx and Millencolin, who will be promoting their new albums “The Ever Passing Moment” and “Pennybridge Pioneers.” Good Riddance, TSOL, and Jurassic 5 are some other main stage acts. For the smaller bands there will be a few side stages set up for what would be the openers. The cool thing about Warped Tour is that it’s general addmission; there is no seating and everyone pays the same price. Warped Tour takes place on open grounds, that is why some of the venues are in parking lots; it’s like a huge carnival with many different types of food stations to choose from. Free promotional souviners from different labels will be there like Volcom, Hurley, Transworld Surf and Skateboarding, Playstation, Epitaph records and Fat Wreck Chords.
There will be booths set up everywhere throughout the park with the promoters giving away free stuff such as sample CDs and tapes, posters, stickers, T-shirts, and also stuff for sale. They also designate different meet and greet times throughout the day so any fan could go and shake the hand of the bands they love. Because the whole shindig is put on by Vans skateboarding company it’s only fitting that skateboarding ramps be set up throughout the park. Pro skaters will be able to strut their stuff on the skateboard catwalk, impressing the crowd while loud punk sounds penetrate the open grounds. The skate demo “freak show” features some of the best boarders around including the main man skater headliner Steve Caballero, along with other awsome skaters...Mike Frazier, Rick Thorne, Neal Hendrix, Jon Comer, and Collin Morrison. KROQ will be there blasting sounds from their booth. For guitar players there will be a station dedicated to you, like a mini guitar center you can sit down on a stool and hook up to the guitar of your dreams and play to your heart’s desire.
Tickets for all southern California Warped Tours have already gone on sale and will continue to be on sale until the day of the show. Warped Tour never can really sell out due to the huge open space that’s provided, but I would say just go and buy your tickets anyway so you can prepare for it.
Tickets are about $30.00 and trust me it is so worth it. Rock out!

Badminton
by Amber Arakaki
May 26, 2000
Over the past years, the Colton High badminton team has always achieved greatness. If you look at their banner inside the boys’ gym, a multitude of years where they were league champions shines. This time, they have one more year to add: 2000.
This year’s badminton team swept through the courts with an amazing undefeated season victory streak of 15-0. Etiwanda was the only opposing team that took six points, maximum, against Colton. Therefore, the year has proven overly exceptional to head coach Sandra Guidi. “I realized that we could take league championship, but I didn’t realize we would be beating them by as much as we did,” says Guidi. Guidi attributes their success to hard work and the desire to win.
The badminton team’s attitude toward their undefeated record hadn’t changed their expectations of CIF playoffs. “They had realistic visions of the level of competition that they went up against,” commented Guidi. In their first playoff game, they slaughtered Gladstone with a score of 16 to 3. However, their second playoff game proved to be not so easy. With a score of 12-7 they were defeated by Katella. The team would have liked to add a CIF championship to their banner, but the other teams were simply seeded a lot higher
(Colton was seeded in tenth place). “The other teams were more in depth and they placed in the top in CIF Individuals,” says Guidi. Next year, Coach Guidi looks forward to going further in the playoffs.
Although three seniors will be leaving the team next year, the team will remain strong because most of them are underclassmen. Next year, Guidi hopes to improve on smash defense and serve return. Every year changes in where the team’s strengths and weaknesses lie. “You never know where to work the hardest,” comments Guidi. “Last year, we were stronger in our boys. This year, it’s the girls.”
The team didn’t go as far as they could have, yet they still have memories of a great season swimming in their heads. “I am so proud of this team,” smiles senior co-captain Cathy Villanueva. “Who would have thought we would be Ivy League champions and undefeated?” VIllanueva’s prediction of having most of their players qualifying for CIF came true. Many of the team’s players made individual league placements. In girls’ singles, sophomore Nancy Putri placed first and senior Cathy Villanueva placed second. In boys’ doubles, juniors Owen Daniels and Aristo Wibawa placed second and junior Adianto Danusasmita and senior Dilpreet Singh placed third. Girl’s doubles swept the charts, with sophomores Megan Cambell and Kristarae Flynn placing first, sophomore Felicia Lumingkewas and junior Kristen Arakaki placing second, and juniors Ana Monterrosa and Amber Arakaki placing third. In mixed doubles, seniors Cathy Villanueva and Ray Manembu placed third overall.
As one can easily see, the badminton team is consistent in being the best of the best. The team will keep doing what makes them so great and hope that next year, they’ll have the year 2001 on the flowing banner.
Baseball
by Steve Perez
May 26, 2000
After a year-long absence, the Varsity Baseball team returned to the CIF playoffs in startling fashion. To cap a season of ups and downs, the team finished tied for second in the San Andreas League, on the way compiling a 13-10-1 overall record and an 8-7 league record.
The Jackets (awarded the number two playoff spot by virtue of a tiebreaker over Pacific), faced the Corona Panthers in their first round match-up. The team jumped out to a first inning 2-0 lead. However this would amount to the biggest lead of the game for the Jackets, as the Panthers would tie the game up in subsequent innings before ultimately winning the game 8-3, and ending a storybook season for the Jackets.
After the game head coach Chad Bishop looked reflectively at what might have been. “You always want to do better... we just had one bad inning,” said Bishop.
What about the season and the team’s many accomplishments, you say?
Various players showed great promise this year. “(Junior) Mike Rossano and (Junior) Chris Howard led the team in hitting,” says Bishop. “From last year our goals were to beat Yucaipa and to make the CIF playoffs.”
Both of those goals were met, as the Jackets beat the Yucaipa Thunderbirds 6-5 early in league play. The win over Yucaipa perhaps holds more relevance than others, in light of the Thunderbirds 13-2 league record.
Many people look to next year as very promising. The team is returning the main core of hitters, along with captains Howard and Junior Brian Martinez.
“I think we’ll be good again next year,” says Bishop, “we have twelve starters returning.”
Boys Tennis
by Napa Utrapiromsuk
May 26, 2000
Boys Tennis started the season with high expectations, but the team struggled throughout the year. The season ended on May 8, and the Varsity’s overall record was 1-19. Coach Terry Urban said that of the three goals he had set in the beginning of the season, two were accomplished. The three goals were: for the guys to improve, not to have a shut out, and to win five matches.
Freshman Jordan Hall landed the number one spot for singles. Seniors Kris and Shawn Augsburger are the top doubles players. The team will have to say good-bye to the three senior captains, Patrick Flynn, Shawn Augsburger, and Kris Augsburger, along with senior Orville Bell. This was Bell’s first year on the team, and according to Coach Urban he “played good.”
Junior Raul Romero said that the season was “a stepping stone for what will come.”
“The whole season was memorable,” said Flynn. Coach Urban plans on coaching next year. Hopefully next season will be more exciting, but with Urban’s “go out there and do your best” speech; will take the pressure off the boysand they will be able to actually do their best.
Golf
by Stephanie Farrior and Lisa Humphrey
May 26, 2000
This season the boy’s golf team did pretty well considering that they made second place in the CIF’s. However Coach Tars Petrie says, “The team needs to be able to play more consistently.” They have four new members this year: sophomores Jason Deshazo, Jeff Doolittle, and freshmen Kyle Reed, Cody Moore.
The CIF’s were played in Jurupa Hills this year. Colton took second place to Yucaipa. Two teams members, Moore and Hillpot, made it to the individual CIFs, played at the Desert Willow Golf Course in Palm Springs. Moore scored a 94, Hillpot a 77. Unfortunately, Hillpot just missed the individual playoffs.
The boys practice everyday Monday-Thursday from three to six if there are no tournaments. The tournaments are usually every Tuesday and Thursday at 3:00 p.m. Practices are held at the San Bernardino Golf Course.
There have been many changes on the team this year. Last year, they lost the seniors, and picked up four younger players. The guys now have two coaches: Petrie, and Assistant Coach Chris Burner. “They are good guys, and they keep us mentally focused,” says senior Brandon Moore. Jeremy Maldonado adds, “They always try to keep us calm when we do bad, and keep the team’s spirit up.”
Golf may be a challenging sport, but for Doolittle it relieves stress because he doesn’t have to run. “It’s relaxing,” comments Moore. Brother Cody says “Golf isn’t hard like soccer.” For some it may be hard to keep their concentration in golf. Maldonado trys to “forget everything else around, and concentrate only on hitting the ball far.”
Softball
by Steve Perez
May 26, 2000
The Varsity Softball team lost Tuesday in the second round of the playoffs to the Corona Panthers (26-3) by a score of 3-0. The loss ended the team’s remarkable season, a season which saw them achieve a 23-2 overall record and a 15-0 league record.
“Corona is a good, solid team,” Head Coach Joe Montes said. “We came close, but we couldn’t push it over.”
The game proved to be a pitcher’s duel as Junior Desiree Serrano, considered one of the top pitchers in San Bernardino County, faced off against Corona’s Kristi DeVries, considered one of the top pitchers in Southern California. However Serrano, who has scarcely pitched a bad inning all season, allowed two runs in a subpar third inning on a triple by DeVries and a single by Karli Burneleit.
But the Jackets were not without their chances. In the sixth senior Kelly Villalobos led off with a single. She was forced out at second on sophomore Cary Akins’ bunt. Sophomore Tina Villalobos followed with a ground out, which enabled Akins to reach second on an error by second baseman Berneleit. A second error by Burneleit loaded the bases, bringing up senior Kenya Gray. Gray hit the ball up the middle, where DeVries started a double play.
Did the Jackets meet their full potential, losing in the second round of the playoffs? “I think we could have gone all the way,” said Serrano. “But we had a successful season.”
Successful to say the least. En route to compiling back-to-back San Andreas League titles, the Jackets acheived and undefeated, 15-0 record in league for the first time in school history. The teams lone regular season defeat was in the championship of the Rialto Tournament. Pitcher Serrano is easily the top pitcher in San Bernardino County, which can be evidenced by her multiple no-hitters this season.
Expect the Jackets to be back with a vengeance next season, as the team returns numerous players that contributed this year.
“Next year looks great!” said Serrano. “We have just about everyone coming back.”
Swimming

You could say that 2000 was a good year for swim season as far as members and time improvements go. Both the boys and girls teams had a good turn out this season. Several freshman came out this season all ready to learn and practice hard. Unfortunately, the poor won-loss record the team posted reflected the struggles the team had against opponents this year.
This year the boys team had enough swimmers for each event. Despite their record, Coach James Vickers and Elise Whalin led their teams to vast improvements in times and strokes.
“The most memorable part (of the season) for me, was the good showing that our swimmers had at the League Finals meet,” says Coach Vickers. A matter of fact, five all-league patches were distributed to Colton swimmers.
Unfortunately, the swim team will have to say a farewell to nearly ten seniors this year. Including some of its best swimmers: Beth Mleczko, Katie Giroux, Chris Tuner, Hector Cabrera, and Allison Botz. Even though swim didn’t win any of their matches this season, major improvements were made to help make next year even better. As for next year, Coach Vickers says, “We want to teach a more aggressive attitude in attacking the water.” Sounds like next year is going to be a good season.
Track

200m’s..400m’s..hurdles..discus...high jumping; where do the capabilites of track stop? In Colton, it seems, it stops when the money’s not there.
Yes, there are a myraid of events but without a reasonable budget from the board Colton will never excel greatly in them because, according to Head Coach Bill Halley, “the district needs to fund for more coaches. This sport should have a minimum of five coaches and we have about three.”
This year twelve girls qualified for league finals and together the boys and girls won two track meets, but the team’s struggles this season doesn’t stop the positive outlook that some of the team members have. “I think as a team we are really growing and developing,” said sophmore Stephanie Flynn. Flynn qualified for league finals in three different events and acheived a fourth place standing in 100m hurdles.
Due to the impending absence next year of sprinter coach Alicia Byrnes, many people are questioning how the track team will cope. “It’s going to be tough to replace someone who has so much knowledge in so many areas,” said Halley. This is very true, Byrnes has helped repeatedly with long jump, hurdles, and high jumping, but what will happen when the new coach comes in? Will the next coach have as much knowledge or even more then Byrnes? That will have to be left up to the board, but Halley assures us that he will have some say in who will fill the postion, but “ultimately it is up to the board.”
“Colton has long since been considered a pushover,” adds Flynn, “but not for much longer...we could have used some more support from the school and new uniforms.”
The XFL is coming soon! Are you ready?

(Special Internet bonus story)
"The NFL has become too conservative, too corporate, with too much regulation.", these are the words of WWF chairman Vince McMahon on that fateful day in March when Mr. McMahon decided to change sports and create a new league of football named the XFL. A league where the fans get what they want, a league where they get to be inside the huddle, inside the locker room and on the side lines.
The XFL will consist of 10 teams which might be located in some of these major U.S. cities: Washington D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, New York, New Orleans, Houston, Los Angles, Seattle, Sacramento, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, and Orlando. Five cities have been confirmed and there stadiums Los Angles-The coliseum, Miami-The Orange Bowl, Orlando-The Citrus Bowl, San Francisco-3com Park and Washington D.C.- RFK Stadium.
The XFL will have a ten game regular season that will begin Febuary 3, 2001 (after the NFL season is over) and will continue with a four team play-off and a championship game at a neutral site. The rules will differ slightly from the NFL to create faster play and will allow players to celebrate after a touchdown unlike the NFL in it's new season.
Many skeptics say the XFL is doomed to fail and will be to costly Vince McMahon has already reportedly spent over 300 million dollars on the XFL and that number is expected to grow. One dilemma that the new league will face is the problem of finding a channel to show games because of legal troubles with the USA network, but this problem might be fixed soon because FOX is looking for something new to take the place of the failed arena football. What analyst don't take in to account is that there are millions of wrestling fans that will watch the XFL just because of Vince McMahon and that combined with football fans will make that XFL a success.
