Did someone say,"A.S.S?"
By Liliana Aguilar
May 23, 2003"Support your A.S.S.!" " Come support Colton High's A.S.S.!" You too have probably heard these catchy phrases during the last two carnivals. But what exactly is A.S.S? It's the name of the new science club here at Colton High; its real name is actually the Associated Student Scientists of Colton High. Yet there has been quite a controversy regarding the acronym. Vice President Adam Digby says that "It's not meant to be taken as just the A.S.S. club, it's meant to cause intrigue." And intrigue they have caused, during the first carnival in which they sold something they were told by various teachers that they should not hold up a sign that said "Support your A.S.S."
Teachers and students have mixed feelings regarding the name. Many students don't really know what the club is promoting, since its connotation can be misleading. Doug Gage says, " It is totally unprofessional and inappropriate." Student Gilbert Hernandez felt similarly saying that, " It's inappropriate and uncalled for. It should be called something else." President Stevie Siebert commented that she saw nothing wrong with the name and that she saw no reason why a name change would be necessary. She feels that it would be important to keep the name since it's not doing any harm to anyone.
The Associated Student Scientist club was started in order to raise funds for the science department. They felt that with the budget cuts they could start a club to raise money to fund the department, as well as expand its activities.
Vice Principal Claudia Harris says, " I support the Associated Student Scientist club. We've needed that here forever, and what they are doing is excellent." But when asked about the abbreviation she said, " I'm not going to go yay or nay." Depending on what your view is you can either choose to support it or dump it. Everyone will just have to wait and see is the name will be kept.
Oh, by the way meeting are held every other Monday in room 50.

My Night in Hell with Marilyn Manson
(actually, it was at Sam Goody's, but who's to quibble when you get to meet
the AntiChrist Superstar Himself?
by Robert Campos
May 23, 2003Have you ever wanted to meet your idol so much that you would sell your body by the roadside in order to get a ride? That's how I felt May 13. The best band in the world, and for those of you that don't know who it is, Marilyn Manson, was going to be at the Universal Citywalk in LA. After getting wind of this on the ever-faithful internet, my friend Greg Macias and I started making plans to go fulfill our lifelong ambitions, which was to meet the Anti-Christ Superstar and his band.
As we walked into the Citywalk some lady automatically told us "Sam Goody's in the center of the City Walk, to your right." That stupid, deceiving slave to the government led us in the wrong direction. We found it in about 10 minutes but it's just the principle of the situation. We got in line for what was the beginning of the eight hours we would be spending there.
Greg and I asked two people to save our spots in line as we walked into the Sam Goody. We saw posters of the band that were about the size of vinyl records just lying on the floor. Greg, being the desperate Mansonite he is, asked one of the employees if we could have one. She smartly replied "No, you can't, those aren't for you." Her attitude was very icy and cold. Before we left we warned her we would eventually get one before the night was over. And we did, we ran back inside and tore a couple of the wall and ran like a couple of bats out of hell.
After waiting another hour Greg and I found our way to the front of the line and were about to fulfill the act that we never foresaw ourselves doing; meeting Marilyn Manson. The first thing I noticed was two gigantic M's painted on the wall behind Marilyn. Marilyn was wearing a black bowler hat, a black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, leather sleeves, and gray suspenders, along with his trademark mismatched eyes. Tim was wearing a black dress shirt also with the sleeves rolled up and had the most awesome leather sleeves; even his tie was unique and neat, black with the numbers OOX181 +O33-49953X imprinted in white; of course his smeared lipstick was there. After we pushed our way up I was allowed to meet my idol, John 5, and before I went up I had a million questions I wanted to ask the band. But when I got up there I was speechless. All I could say was "You are my idol. I love your guitar" All he did was mutter a sheepish, "Thanks." I gave him a picture from the CD I bought and before I left I also asked him if he would sign the poster I stole. Of, course, I didn't tell him I stole it. He did, even though the band was only supposed to sign one item per person. He shook my hand and after that I never wanted to wash it again. (I did right after, though.)
Marilyn Manson was very interested in what we had to say and our questions about The Golden Age of Grotesque. He asked us little things like "Where did you come from?" "Colton" "Where's that?" "About an hour away." "Really, you came that far to see us?" "Of course!" "Well, I really hope you like The Golden Age of Grotesque."
The entire ride home after meeting them, a smile never left my face.
Colton drummer heads for the big stage; will tour Europe will rock band
By Sara Robbin
May 23, 2003In who's who of the alternative rock scene, the band Anemic, has hit it hard with gaining popularity and will be touring the lands of England, ending with a full European tour. But Colton High will be saying farewell to one of its own, 17-year old, Matt Hernadez, drummer of the band, and junior at Colton High, for he has said his good-byes and took his flight this past Wednesday.
How did a drummer from an inconspicuous inland empire high school get to taste the big time so quickly? In the year 2000 Hernandez saw an ad for a drummer, so he called and got the job. This was when Matt became associated with brothers Kevin and Dan Peters. Then they met up with bassist Shane Curran, who happened to be from San Bernardino. After a couple performances in Hollywood, Kevin and Dan decided that they wanted to go back to England. It so happens that Matt got a call saying that the band they had formed got signed to a record label in England called Sugar Shack Records. From there the band officially became called Anemic. In England, Anemic will be touring London and finishing off with all the rest of the European countries in December. They plan to come out with a CD in February. Anemic has their own website where you can listen to their music and read about their latest news; www.anemic1.com or if you want to check out their record label, you can go to www.sugarshackrecords.com.
Although he's dropping out of school temporarily in order to tour with the band, Hernandez's personal plans are to receive his G.E.D. and maybe go to art school. He would also like to open up his very own tattoo parlor. As for his views on life, he says, "Don't let anyone stop you from your dreams."

May 23, 2003My last column. Throughout the past year you, my reader, have been filled with knowledge and wisdom through the joy of my many lists. The time has flown quickly and now, I must say goodbye. Farewell to the losers that must stay here, while I go on to a better place. But before I do, I must share one last list, the things I will miss from this wonderful place I joyfully ventured to each and every day for the past four years.
1. My journalism table. Though it was a group that banded together for only the past two years, we have spent many a good laugh and tears. Never again will my morning hour be spent discussing various topics from the lady or the tiger to exactly who had the hugest crush.
2. The Pepper Bough. I will miss the writing, the editing and the class no matter how much I complained during the year about that.
3. The friends I'll never see again. You know the ones. You weren't exactly best friends but you saw each other in class and after graduation there won't be that chance. Unless of course you go to Wal-mart, then you will see everybody.
4. Luara and Alice. Still in my opinion the two coolest juniors, soon to be seniors.
5. Speech and debate. I will never spend my Saturdays, endlessly arguing only to lose and then realize I have more personality than the other team any way, so take that. What ever will I do with my free time?
6. The opportunity to slack off. Never has this been more enjoyed than in senior year. Now I move on to a place where you do not take off a day and if you skip a day of reading in your textbook, you're lost for about a month. And now I have to stay awake.
7. AP English. Like mentioned in a previous column, AP is a cult that will be hard to give up. I may even have to stop relying on spark notes so much.
8. The tests. Granted I didn't have to take the CST senior year, and SAT and AP test are long done, I will miss the privelage. Now, the test I take will actually count for something, my grade, which inevitably count for my diploma, and no longer can I just sit there and randomly guess.
9.Free education. Here is something that I always took for granted. As I frantically gather together the $6000 needed for room and board and anticipate the other $4000 needed for tution, books and supplies, I longingly look back on free education. For twelve years, I was supplied with textbooks, crayons and knowledge and the best part: it was all free! I bid farewall to that.
So good bye to Colton High. Priscilla Montgomery has left the building.
BSN Are all these graduation requirements really necessary? Pro
By Kristen Hinshaw
May 23, 2003
I think it is good that we have these graduation requirements. These requirements are there to make sure we get the right amount of education that we need to do well in life, to get into a good college and to get the jobs we want. Without these graduation requirements students wouldn't be getting the right education they need and because they do not get the right education, they would be limited to the colleges and jobs that they want. You can easily pass these requirements as long as you pay attention, ask questions, and don't slack off.
If your dream job is to work at McDonalds then that's cool, but personally I would like to go somewhere in my life rather than working at a fast food place. These requirements help you to go somewhere in life. They are a stepping stone, the basic knowledge we will need later in life. You can meet these requirements and even get more education than what you need. Now these days it isn't very easy to become whatever you want, you need to work hard to get what you want. Whatever you put in is what you will get out. If you put in hard work your life will be great and you will have success, but if you don't try you wont get anywhere. Say you wanted to be a doctor, you need to get these requirements and get more education, but also not just that you need good grades to be able to get into the right college for that job. So see there are a lot of reasons why we need or why we should have these requirements.
Another requirement recently added for students from the class of 2004 and on is the new high school exit exam, the math and English section of the CAHSEE. This test will determine whether or not you should graduate high school. Many people complain that the test is hard, and they won't be able to pass it but see you have your four years in high school to take it and pass it! If you are taking the classes you should and actually try hard on the test you could pass it. There are also classes you can take to help you pass the high school exit exam your first time. Having a test will prove only those who know the information are moving on where college and your job is only going to get increasingly difficult.

May 23, 2003Why is it that we are trying to make our standards harder when kids are not even passing their classes? The class of 2003 is one of the highest classes to have non-graduating students and that is because they can't pass their competencies. That only leaves us to look at one thing: why aren't they getting the material in class? There are so many answers to this because in this school there are many ways to pass your classes without learning anything at all. You never learn anything so when you need to pass your competencies you don't have any knowledge to rely on. We have so many requirements for everything that we do: two years of Spanish , three years of math, and 85 credits in electives just to graduate. There is more if you want to go to a good college. You have six classes which consist of the normal schedule English, math, science, etc and there is homework every night for each class. There aren't enough classes to add up 85 elective credits which means alot of us have to take summer school just to catch up on that. How is a normal student supposed to do so much work that they don't understand and still be able to pass their competencies? They lack the passion to learn because they don't understand the consequences of not caring.
Our school has some of the easiest competency requirements, and it should be easier. Although this is true we don't have one thing the other schools have, the lack of interest in teaching. In schools such as Riverside Poly, Redlands and North their students are pushed to succeed and they don't take school for granted because they understand the value of their education. People don't see a point in it until senior year when they are so many credits behind and need to pass their competencies. You can't leave high school up to the kids to decide because if it was up to them they would not go to school at all, and in our school that's what we are doing we are just putting it in their hands to ruin. People don't know what the requirments are until their junior or senior year and by then they are working like crazy just to pass. They need to be informed, some personal time to take a look can save someone alot of time.
A lot of the time it could be the students fault not because they wanted to fail and not graduate but because they weren't told any better. High school isn't meant to be easy but also if we increasing competencies and what it takes to graduate soon enough we won't have any students actually making it.

May 23, 2003Summertime: it's supposed to be a break from all your troubles, the perfect time to kick back with all your homies (or your friends) and just relax. But lately to me it seems like summer has become something you need to prepare yourself for, and stress over, and almost dread. Look at all the articles out there: skin cancer, finding the perfect swim suit, losing weight so you can look good in that swimsuit, polluted beaches, rolling blackouts, high gas prices. Pretty soon summer can seem more like hell than heaven. I think we all need to go back to elementary school and take some cues from kids that really know how to enjoy life. It's like you get into high school and so many people are trying so dang hard to be mature, to drive a car, have a job, get a boyfriend/girlfriend who is old enough to be on social security, etc, now all these things are well and good (well maybe not the last one), but c'mon people! A lot of "young adults" don't seem to remember what they are missing, so its time to be reminded. This is my list of all the mandatory things everyone in the whole world should do each summer to fully get the most they can out of those summer days and those summer nights.
1. Chase after the ice cream man. Seriously, never get too old to look like a complete idiot running down your block trying to catch up with a musical white van for three reasons: ice cream tastes good, it will make your friends laugh, and if you're still concerned about that swimsuit, the running is good exercise.
2. Have a Barbeque, wear a white shirt. This is absolutely what summer is all about. You have to get a big fat stain down the front of your shirt. That way you will be guaranteed to see your worst enemy, or even better, your crush.
3. Run through the sprinklers. Hey, why not? I suggest this even if you have pool, it's cheap simple fun; there is still something almost magical about those jets of water droplets.
4. Go camping in your backyard. This is a necessity; you can tell scary stories, make shadow puppets with your hands, have S'mores (only have those if you're allowed to start fires in your yard) and just forget about everything else! And the best part is, if it gets real scary or boring, you can always just go inside.
5. Rent all the best summer movie classics, and watch them all night long. And while you're at it, invite some friends over and have a sleepover (make sure you get The Sandlot and The Goonies.)
6. Blow bubbles. This is quite honestly a super fun activity. Have a bubble blowing contest, or try to catch them on your tongue, or just watch them float away. You won't be sorry you did.
7. Throw water balloons at your sister, or brother if that's all you've got. Take it a step further and ambush your neighbors--start an all out water war on your street. What better way is there to spend a whole afternoon?
Basically the point of this whole article is that, summer (or life) should be fun! Don't take it too seriously or else you can end up missing so much. Try not giving a damn what anyone thinks once in a while, do something just to make you happy, even if it seems immature or weird or just plain stupid. All these ideas have one thing in common, they make you forget about looking cool, or old, or whatever, its all about having fun. Not to say that you should take all things in stride, some things like UV rays, and SAT scores need to be taken with utmost seriousness.
More teaching, less testing!
By Shauna Pardo
May 23, 2003Got to study, study, study! Too many tests with not enough time for whatever the reason there may be. Why isn't there enough time? For each class, no matter what you're taking, you will have a test. Whether you have them every day or once a week, month, or year, you still have one. There are some people who always study, day and night. We have all seen those types of people. They are the ones majorly stressed, have bags under their eyes and Starbucks coffee 24/7 by their side. Then there are those who just don't care whatsoever. They are the people failing almost every class because they put forth absolutely no effort on tests, or anything for that matter.. They could care less about the knowledge they are gaining (or losing).
Granted, there are some important tests taken throughout high school, such as the High School Exit Exam and semester finals. Then there are the student favorites the tests that really don't effect your grade in the least, springs STAR testing, or now called the CST test.
Here is the breaking point for most students. After a year of schooling and studying there are almost two weeks of straight testing!!! Every morning you walk into the same classroom to the same teachers and the same students. After a while you become frustrated and annoyed, to the point where you don't want to test anymore. You don't try and you just start guessing so you can get it over with and done. Then when colleges are looking over you wrong answers they assume that you are just stupid because you just can't think! Whether you get the teachers you despise or love during your testing, you still don't want to be there.
The STAR testing is what really gets me upset. I think the schedule that was set up was a little unnecessary. Going to our 5th and 7th period classes everyday while our other classes inconsistently switching off. The test takes up about two hours of our class schedule. Even though they only take two hours, it feels like your brain has been working non-stop for two days straight. There is also no way to prepare for these tests. It's not like you could really study for them because you do not know what material is going to be on the test. You could only rely on your teacher, trust that what they taught you is going to be on the test. Trust that your teachers tested you on the material that you needed to be tested on, not some off the subject pop quiz for their own entertainment.
All I'm trying to say is that there are too many tests and not enough time to learn the material and study. You can only do one.
What's the big deal about cell phones on campus?
By Raylene Carrillo
May 23, 2003The State Board of Education says they will grant us the liberty to have cell phones at school. But Colton Joint Unified School District says they don't want us to have that liberty. I say that is ridiculous, if the State Board of Education says it's ok then why should we stand in the way of their decision.
If we had cell phones at school; just like everything else it would come with rules. I'm sure we wouldn't be able to just pull out our phones and talk anytime we would like or have our phone ring in the middle of class. If we were able to use them during passing periods and at lunch I wouldn't see a problem with that.
A good example for us having cell phones on campus would be the Columbine shooting. It wasn't the administrators calling the cops it was the students that weren't supposed to have their cell phones. If those students didn't have their cell phones the cops would have shown up later and things would have been a lot worse.
Say our parents needed us. I know the administrators say, "Have your parents call the office and we will give you the message." Yeah, I've done that before, my dad has called the office to let me know that I had a doctor's appointment, I ended up getting the message too late and missing my appointment. One thing I don't understand is why are teachers allowed to have cell phones. If they need anything I'm sure the office will be able to relay their message quickly.
Hot guys! Hot babes! Hot beaches!
By Leticia Zamora
May 23, 2003Being as privileged as we are to live in such a beautiful region, we should all take advantage of our location and make it a priority to visit la playa. Ah yes, the beach; where sun sand and surf rule. A place where girls can even out their tans, and boys can check out the waves and the chicks. As Southern Cali residents gear up for summer, we are faced with a dire decision… which beach to bum it at?
In this great state, there is a beach to fit every want and/or preference. If you're looking for some inexpensive food, a variety of board and head shops, with a combo of a semi-crowded beach, then head to Venice for all of the above. Not too far from Venice is Seal Beach. It is a quiet city with antique and board shops, car dealerships, as well as a variety of food establishments to fit any budget. Nothing too unique about this one except for its striking sun sets. Parking can be a bit of a hassle, but it is worth it if you want a break from all the herds of beach goers.
"Surf City," Huntington Beach is great for shopping (especially on Fridays!), the assortment of shops, pizza joints, clothing stores, and malls in this area are unlike any other. Volleyball, skating, and biking are a big part of the way of life here. Huntington is also well known for its fire rings. This timeless beach is definitely the place to have a bonfire. Grab a bit to eat at Ruby's at the far end of the pier; the view is marvelous. If you so happen to be with your honey, remember to get friendly down in the sand under the boardwalk.
For a more crowded setting, visit Santa Monica, the most popular beach in SoCal. Their pier is full of attractions. The amusement park, volleyball nets, bike path, and recently renovated chess park complete the package. Just be cautious as to not accidentally drink the water, you might catch something from this over polluted area. On a lighter note, there are also FREE live concerts every Thursday night during the summer. There are plenty of local shops to checkout, as well as lots of clubs for the 18+ crowds.
Although there may be some bothersome parking difficulties, Laguna is a premier beach to scope; very charming and scenic. Be sure to take a vehicle that can handle the uphill drives, lots of ascending hills in this hot spot. The waves are decent, and shopping here is a must. If you find your self in an area too crowded for your likes, just head North or South along the shore and you'll find plenty of secluded bays and coves.
For those of you whom are interested in going farther down south, you have got to hit up Belmont Shore in the San Diego vicinity. Not to be confused with the area of the same name in nearby Long Beach, this beach is off the hook! Tons of eye candy for both sexes, loads of pizza joints, plenty of clothing and/or head shops to explore, a petite amusement park, classic arcade, and complete with a reasonably priced beachfront hotel. The restroom facilities are the cleanest I've ever seen. If you like collecting seashells, this is the beach to do it. Sand Dollars as well as other shells mantle the shore adding even more beauty and eccentricity to this beach. This shore is only minutes away from Sea World, and even closer to one of the most exclusive shopping circles in San Diego. This is unquestionably an awesome beach to visit in SoCal.
Of all the shores, and all the piers, in all the coasts, in all the world, the beaches in Southern California are definitely the most unforgettable. Do yourself a favor and make it a point to watch the sunset at least once along the Pacific Coast.
Let's lose the books and have some fun
By Lauren Young
May 23, 2003Ok, the year is coming to an end and everybody is wondering what they're going to do this summer. Well, I have some ideas that just might answer that question for you. For one thing if anybody has ever heard of the Gotham nightclub then they know that they have a thing called teen night where the teens can go and show what they've got. These nights will be held on Tuesdays around 9:00 p.m. If the whole night club thing isn't your thing than your can gather up some friends and go to an amusement park; Six Flags, Knott's Berry Farm, Disneyland, just take your pick and spend the day riding roller coasters.
Or instead of doing that, you can just go and chill with your friends at any beach of your choice. And for the fans of Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera, they are having a tour and that will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on June 16. So you who are fans should look into that. For more concert ideas, see the story below "Who's hitting the concert stages this summer?"
Ok I haven't forgot about those of you that don't like to spend all day everyday outside. For you there will be lots of good movies this summer that you will be able to rent. Grab some popcorn, some friends and sit down and enjoy a good movie without the sun burning your skin.
If you're the type that likes to work, than go out and get a fun summer job. For example, if you like kids, find a job at a day care. Now if you would prefer adult co-workers then there are lots of places that you could work where there will be a lot of adults around. That way you will be making money and having fun at the same time . Ok so these are some of my suggestions you can take them or not but remember summer goes by really fast so grab a camera and go out there and make some memories with some of the your best friends.
Summer fun or Summer bum?
By April Valenti
May 23, 2003Summer / (sumer) n: the stretch of the year from June to August. A fairly long period of time that you don't have to attend classes.
Although most spend the majority of their time working or even in summer school some have extravagant plans. So, what are you doing this summer?"I'm going to the Ozzfest this summer, to see Marilyn Manson, Korn and a bunch of other people I don't care enough to talk about." (Robert Compos -9th grade)
"I'm going to the hootenanny to see some bands and get down with my bad self." (Romeo Pagdilao- 9th grade)"This summer I'm going to Tokyo bay, because it is Tokyo bay. I will be doing lots of sight-seeing with my uncle Bob" (Shayne Robinson-9th grade)
"I plan to visit the Sphinx, the Pyramids, and the souvenir shops. I would like to bring home jewelry, baked goodsshoes, and stuff like that." (Marsa Abdelmesih-10th grade)
"I will be going to Hawaii for two weeks, hanging out with friends, and playing baseball for the Fontana Mustangs." (Noel Forst)
"I'm going to spend time with my family in Missouri, and eventually move there." (Ryan Parnell-12th grade)
"This summer I will go back home to Denmark. I stayed in [the] U.S. for 11 months and I like it a lot, and Colton High was so good." (Jorgen Torp-12th grade)
Take care of the skin you're in
By April Valenti
May 23, 2003"I mean, it is deadly and it is just something you should be concerned about. So wear some sunscreen and cover up and don't go to tanning beds," states Dr. Paul Mansfield, with M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. According to doctors skin cancer is the leading killer of people in their 20s and 30s. The three most common forms are Basal cell carcinoma, Squamous cell carcinoma and Melanoma. The Skin Caner Foundation, (S.C.F.) says that one in six people will be diagnosed with Basal Cell Carcinoma in their lifetime. One in six will face Melanoma. Approximately 20 percent of people diagnosed with melanoma die.
I hope those statistics are enough to show you that this is a huge issue, but what can we do to protect our selves. First of all don't have unprotected tanning. Don't sit in the sun, especially during the peak hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Granted, most of you want a skin color like J Lo, whether it is natural or not, but with the above-mentioned odds, I'd like you to consider whether the risk is worth it. A trend that seams to be growing by the minute is the "easy" tanning booth solution; however, the S.C.F. says "exposure to the radiation of a tanning both may be more risky than exposure to the sun."
Keep in mind that the harmful ultraviolet radiation that the sun puts out can penetrate many types of clothes (i.e. loose weave, tight fit, or light colored clothes) and through the windows in your car and house, so just think of the harm that would occur to "unprotected" skin. Don't believe the common myth that fair skinned people with freckles are the only ones that can be hit by this disease; although it is true that they are most at risk, all races are vulnerable.
It is recommended that you frequently check your body and if you have the slightest suspicion, see a doctor quick. The S.C.F. says, "Almost all skin cancer that is diagnosed early and treated promptly and appropriately can be cured." Watch for moles that are not round and symmetrical, often if it is cancer they will have uneven borders. Look out for varied shades of brown, red, black, white, blue or tan. If you find a spot that exceeds the size of a pencil eraser then you could possibly have a problem. Beware of moles that change, watch the size. A sore that doesn't heal, or a spot that always itches, hurts or scabs, could be skin cancer developing. Also if a member of your family has been diagnosed with skin cancer in the past be extra wary. Almost one out of every ten skin cancer patients had a family member with a history of this disease.
So please have fun this summer and protect your self, wear that sunscreen.
Who's hitting the concert stages this summer?
By Sean Durdle
May 23, 2003Whether you like standing in the back and watching or getting in the crowd and moshing, concerts are always exciting experiences. Don't be surprised if this summer's concerts don't disappoint. This year's concerts have all the makings for a great show, even if you're not a fan of all the bands. The following are only a few of the man rock concerts hitting the stages this summer.
Ozzfest-which is probably the most recognized concert to metal fans, is once again hitting the road. This time through the main stage will feature Korn, Disturbed, Chevelle, Marilyn Manson (right) and the always-popular Ozzy Osbourne. The second stage will feature such acts as Nothingface, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Sworn Enemy, Grade 8, Cradle of Filth and much more.
Summer Sanitarium-is once again revived for 2003. This year the featured bands are Metallica (who also head the tour), Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit (we're all waiting for that…ha). Opening acts consist of Mudvayne and the all too well known Deftones.
Vans Warped Tour-takes the cake for the most bands out of all the concerts. Their lineup is made up of over 45 bands. Of course not every band is going to play every show. Afi, The Used, Rancid, Pennywise, Glassjaw, Dropkick Murphy's and Taking Back Sunday are just some of the bands scheduled to play. For the fans of hardcore, Poison the Well, Avenged Sevenfold and From Autumn to Ashes will be playing some shows also.
Lollapalooza-makes it's way through the tour circuit once again. Of course Jane's Addiction will be playing and new to the tour will be Audioslave. Other bands that will play the gig include Incubus, Queens of the Stone Age, Jurassic 5, and the Donnas. On a surprising note, A Perfect Circle will also be playing.
For more information on any of the shows, visit their websites, where you not only get a full list of bands but also the dates of the shows. So if you're sitting at home this summer bored and trying to find out what to do, go see a show. I know that I would go see the Summer Sanitarium show…just for Deftones though. Who knows, maybe you'll get to meet you're favorite band (yeah right).
Prom '03: Two tickets to Paradise
By Leticia Zamora
May 23, 2003
Nights like this never seem to last as long as you'd like them to. It was over almost as fast as it began. The "Paradise With You," themed dance was full of excitement. A new innovative electronic check in made for a convenient entrance to the shindig, and we were lucky enough to be blessed with pleasant weather that evening.
The Los Angeles River and Gardens Center was a "nice place," to hold the event, as junior Anna Tidwell liked to put it. The indoor/outdoor location made for a smashing good time. Two separate dance floors,a balloon drop on the inside dance floor, a strolling magician, wide spread tables, refreshments galore, complete with a beautiful fountain in the center of it all. An assortment of food and drink were available to prom goers. Cookies, cakes, fruit, and all-you-could-drink beverages were provided. Senior Tiahna Porter thought, "…the chocolate covered strawberries sucked…" Many begged to differ. Reactions weren't very mixed regarding the prom; most would agree that it was a beautiful setting, and a memorable occasion.
The music had to have been superior for both dance floors to be packed for the most part. The only time people began to filter towards their seats was during the Michael Jackson songs being played outdoors. While outside mostly R&B, select rap, old skool, and pop were played, inside any and everything from rock en espanol to the Beatles could be grooved to. The two dance floors made an interesting combo of music.
The court nominees were Sara Itani, Lorina Rameriez, Natalie Padua, Brandy Dorado, and Jessica Lopez for queen. Josh Heaton, Johnny Madrid, Ryne Shetterly, Albert Sofyan, and Bobby Ray Ayala were the male court members. By the middle of the evening Josh Heaton was crowned King, and Natalie Padua proclaimed as Prom Queen.
The Junior/Senior Prom 2003 was a night filled with dancing, smooching, eating, taking pictures, getting lost, partying post prom, and even a marriage proposal. Ticket prices this year were even at an all time low. The professional planner, with the help of the Junior Class worked hard to make this years prom the special evening it was. This was truly a night to remember for the nearly four-hundred and fifty in attendance.

Advice from an alumni
By R.C. Heredia, Class of '96
May 23, 2003Editor's Note: R.C. Heredia, older brother of Pepper Bough Sports Editor Paul Heredia, graduated from CHS seven years ago. In this article he offers some perspective on life from someone who's gone out into the "real world".
Thank you for choosing to read this article. Nobody is forcing you to read this particular piece within this newspaper, but you chose to do so. This choice is only one of many choices you will make today. Tomorrow you will continue to make choices, like the choices to wake up, brush your teeth, dress yourself and go to school. You may think that you do not have the choice to go to school or that your parents make that choice for you. Surprise, surprise, but you make the choice to go to school every weekday morning. Of course there are consequences for choosing not to wake up and go to school, such as bad grades, not graduating and parental discipline. So in other words, by choosing to go to school in the morning, you are choosing to avoid such consequences. You may notice that as you grow older, more and more choices come your way. The adults in your life will continue to offer you more choices as you mature toward independence. One of the huge choices that your parents and teachers are preparing you to make in the near future is what to do after high school. Believe it or not, your high school years will come to an end sooner than you expect. Some of you will have long made the choice of what path to take following graduation from Colton High, and some of you will come to realize that the day after your graduation ceremony you need to make this choice.
Some of you will choose to go to a particular college, while some of you will choose to enter the military or job force and others of you will choose to stay at home and milk your parents for all they have. Some of you will choose to get married, have a baby or two while others of you choose to stay single, end your relationship or enter a new relationship. I attended Colton High School from 1992 to 1996. Immediately upon entering high school I made the choice to go straight to a four-year university following graduation. In order to do exactly that, I had to make many important choices along the way. I had to choose to go to school every morning, to enroll in the most challenging classes and to earn the best grades that I could while in high school. I also had to choose my friends and my relationships wisely and which groups I wanted to participate in. Once I had all of my high school classes out of the way I had some high quality choices to make like which colleges to apply to, where I wanted to live and which friendships I wanted to continue growing. Ultimately, I chose to attend UCLA and to move to Los Angeles two months after high school graduation. I had to choose how I wanted to spend the money that I got for college and which major of study I wanted to pursue in college. I had to choose whether or not to join a fraternity, who to make new friends with and how often to come back to Colton to visit my friends and family. Fortunately, I do not regret any of the choices that I made as an 18-year-old student. I am grateful for the opportunities and the quality decisions that I made for myself. I have many things in common with you, as I was a student at the same school, I had many of the same teachers, I learned the same content in class and I had many of the same clubs and sports to get involved in. You too have the opportunity to be in the situation where you can make choices similar to the ones I made.
For the most part, you will find that while in high school you have many things in common with the students at Colton High. For instance, you are all students at the same high school, you share the same teachers, you live in the same community, you study the same subjects and content and you are all working toward graduating with a High School Diploma. The choice of what to do after high school is the one choice that has the power to end all of these commonalties. Your closest friend is likely to make choices that are far different from your own choices, all of which will lead you in different paths. For example, you may choose to get a job while your friend chooses to go to college and you may choose to stay living with your parents while your friend moves to a college town and so on and so on. The good thing is, that you can both choose to remain friends and keep in touch.
The point of all this is that you are near the time in you life where making choices and decisions is going to be crucial for how you end up as an adult. The choices that you have are endless and you should know that you have the opportunity to make high quality choices. High quality choices include which college to attend, which branch of the military to enroll in, what kind of job to apply for or where you would prefer to live. Low quality choices may include, which gang to join, which drug to do or sell and not making choices at all. You should definitely not pass up the opportunity to make high quality choices, or let them slip by.
Hot and sweaty summer leagues just around the corner
By Shauna Pardo
May 23, 2003Finally no school, no homework, no tests, no sports! Or are there? Yes, for all you sportaholics, there will be a majority of the school year sports going on. There's baseball, soccer for guys and girls and basketball for guys and girls. Unfortunately these sports are not just going to be given to you. Sorry all of guys that dream of being professional baseball players.
This year would be the second summer league for Peter Ornelas's and he added a twist to this year's team. Besides, only being able to play if you are invited, you have to have a 2.5 GPA. Last year the team won about ½ of their games but that's not what matters, its all about conditioning and mostly improvement. There will be two teams, the invited varsity member in the Palomino League and team "B" for the invited freshman and JV players.
The soccer for guys league has been going on for quite awhile now, lead by coach Joe Archer; these guys pretty much condition all summer. Yes they play games but like baseball, it's more for practice and improvement. The girls soccer league though, this is all new and Coach Mario Mendoza is not just a new coach, but also a new slave driver. He plans to get the girls in shape and be ready for next year's teams.
Last but not least is basketball. The guys basketball team is not quite sure who their coach will be at the present moment, but are determined to practice and play. The girls are also a fresh new team. With two coaches, Scott Sunderland and Doug Gage, the girls plan on using the summer to get in shape and have fun. For all the people that have no sports going on have a nice summer.
That's A Wrap! For the end of the Season
By Adriane Munoz
May 23, 2003When it comes to the end of the year, it means, the end of the entire season. The fall sports have ended, the winter sports have ended, and now the spring. Even though all these sports have ended, there still is a lot of memory that is held within the players. They have something to share for us.
For the Baseball team, they had an ok season, but hope to come back strong, next year. Although they didn't make it to playoffs, they do have their goals set for next year. Peter Ornelas states, "The best thing about next year, is coming back, and building a stronger team." Their last game was held on May 16 against San Gorgonio.
The Co-ed Track team has a lot of amazing memories, too. The team did not have a very good season, but pulled out some victories for the first time in a few years. they have some confidence and expectations for next year. Senior Bobby Ray Ayala states, "The last game was very stressful for a lot of people who haven't won league yet." Although I could understand that it was important for the seniors because it is their last year here at Colton High.
For Boys Tennis, they manage to make their games fun for themselves, too. Senior Robert Sanchez states, "It was fun being in boys tennis, playing really hard for our team to win." Although the boys tennis didn't make it to playoffs as a team they had some individuals that made it. Their last game was held on May 12 at San Gorgonio.
Co-Ed Swimming, first started off with new swimmers but the emerged to become pretty good swimmers at the end of the season. Senior Melissa Nicks states, " Finals-the boys made it to CIF in the 200 medley relay and a few individual events, and the girls improved their times." The team is hoping for one thing next year, they would want a pool at Colton High. So that way they could practice and work harder for a better season next year
Softball had a great year finishing off third in league. Their last game was held on May 16, here at Colton High. The Softball team still manages to work for their goals and hope to go far in the CIF Playoffs.
Badminton had a good year, too. The best thing they liked about this year was the competition of playing against better teams. They had another league winning season for the fourth straight year in the San Andreas League. Their last game was held on May 8. The team made it to the playoffs as a team and had many individual players that did pretty good.
Boys Golf had a fun season of golf this year. The one thing they like about this year was the hard work they put in, and the effort each of the players gave to the team, even though golf did not have a good season this year. Their last game was held on May 8, at Arroyo Valley.
