New SAT changes announced

November 22, 2002Effective for the class of 2006, a new SAT I has been developed by the Trustees of the College Board. College Board President Gaston Carperton announced these changes. They stated the following:
· A writing section will be added, including multiple-choice questions and a student written essay.
· Analogies will be eliminated and replaced by more critical reading passages from a variety of texts that range from science and history to humanities and literature. (So basically, what is now called the verbal section will be renamed the critical reading section to emphasize the importance of reading.)
· Concepts form Algebra II will be added, and quantative comparisons will be eliminated. The SAT I was first created in 1926. In 1994, it was revised. That year, the College Board's Achievement Test made up the SAT II, which were subject tests. Later a student written essay was added to the SAT II. Which is now the Writing Subject Tests. Unlike the SAT I, the SAT II is an achievement tests that measure how much a student knows about a particular academic subject.
The SAT I has been revised to ensure better standards for college. Along with the SAT I, a diagnostic will be added. This will give diagnostic information to help improve the academic skills of a student. If you want more information about the changes to the SAT I, it can be found at http://www.collegeboard.com/. At this site, you are able to register for the SATs and find out more about some of the other government tests. If you are planning to attend a UC or any other private college, you will most likely have to take the SAT I, and SAT II to see if you are up to their standards. The site can help you prepare for each of these placement exams by purchasing practice resources. You are also able to view and send out your scores to different colleges. If you have questions; this site can answer many of those questions for you or you can contact the College Board Communications & Public Affairs Division at (212) 713-8052.
The tardy policy: to run or not to run

November 22, 2002We all know about the infamous TNT Policy here at Colton High. But what we do not know is its effectiveness. Is the policy working? The enforcement of this policy is mainly due to our assistant principals, Lynne Sheffield and Claudia Harris. "TNT policy is working," says Sheffield. "We will have it going on continually. We have always had a tardy policy at Colton High, this year it is being enforced." This is because tardiness is just getting too big of a problem. "Students were missing the first 10 to 15 minutes of class, there would be a big group of students in 32b for second to fifth or sixth period." Sheffield shows a graph of the total number of tardies since the beginning of the school year. Of the graph, " There's some peaks in the middle, but overall you can clearly see the regression of tardies, it's a big difference." Sheffield adds, " Students are on time and it's fewer interuptions for the teachers." In the beginnig of the year the number of students tardy each day were up in the high 80's and low 90's . Now the average is down to the mid 30's and still going down. "It's a good thing," exclaims Sheffield.
But what do the students think? "I think it's lame," says senior Ashley Wall. She's had three TNT's so far and she's not convinced that it works. "I don't really care if I'm late or not. Besides, all of the class work we do doesn't even start until after the first 10 or 15 minutes or class. What's wrong with coming to class one or two minutes late?" It seems that the thought of Saturday School doesn't scare some students into running to class. But it does scare others. Senior Leslie Cerritos observed, " Everyone is just standing around and as soon as the tardy bell rings It's like, whoosh! Everyone starts running to class."
"When I went to a teacher meeting on September 27 for Deca," explained Senior Erika Rosete, "Principal Jerry Almendarez spoke about the TNT Policy and showed the statistical graphs of how well it is working. Tardiness was very low compared to before, with a huge drop."
It's a fact, the TNT Policy is working. So if you're going to be late, do what a lot of other Colton High students do and run.
War with Iraq: Do two wrongs make a right?

November 22, 2202"We have way to much power for them to really hurt us," says Tory Kennard, junior at Colton High.
As you have all probably seen on the news the United States is about to go to war with Iraq because the US believes they are developing, or already have, chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, making them a threat to world peace. Not a lot of people know this but if the United States goes to war it will hurt a lot of people. The question of the day is how do people on campus feel about the possiblity of war with Iraq.
"No we shouldn't go t war because it is way to dangerous and all were going to do is kill a lot of people,"says junior Candy Bautista.
Sometimes countries go to war without considering all the consequences: sophormore Jessica Adair says no, we shouldn't go to war, all it would do is make evrything worse, especially the effects on young people. For example most guys in this school are scared because if we do go to war then when they turn 18 they are going to have to register for the draft, a possible prelude to serving overseas. "We should only go to war only when our national security is at stake,"says Lt.Col Mahoney of the ROTC program .
Chief Porter, also of the ROTC program agrees: "Yes, I think that war in Iraq would affect Colton High," he says, "but we need to go to war to stop terrorism and agression. But this also should be the last time because we should try other things first before going to war. War should be the last resort." And speaking about our Junior ROTC program they are in training for possibile military service. What happens if we do go to war? Will all the girls in training want to go and nurse their fellow men classmates back to health?
War is going to make a lot of things change for a lot of people. And then there's always the person that thinks that we should go to war. For example, an anonymous junior says that we should go to war so that we can actually prove to them that we are not just talk, we do take action. Even though this might actually be a good idea, we still need to think about if we lose what will happen then? We lose a lot of people, is that really what we want to happen to the men of the United States?
If we go to war or not is very unpredictable and there is nothing that anybody can do to help that, all we can really do is sit, wait and hope that the people we truly love won't get hurt.

November 22, 2002I have found that a lot of things bug me, mostly people. So its time to give my readers another list, a list of things that bug me. Please note that this is not a complete list. It is only the top things that bother me, not all of them.
1. People who deny they watch the Disney Channel.
Everyone does it. You're not cool just because all you watch is MTV.
2. People who stop right in front of you while walking through the halls.
I always have the urge to yell at people who do this because the halls are small relative to the amount of students walking in them. Doing this causes a huge traffic jam, which gets in my way, which annoys me.
3. Couples who are all up on each other during school.
Its great to represent that you got a man; but sometimes, you just need to get a room or something because it is just gross.
4. Couples who are walking through the hall, all up on each other, and stop right in front on you.
Enough said.
5. The group of people that form the chatting circle in the middle of the hall during passing period.
Someday, I will run in the middle of these circle, quack like a duck, then continue on my way.
6. People who walk around with one pant leg scrunched up.
Get over it. You're either wearing pants or capris. It can't be both.
7. People who talk while others are talking.
This is at its worst when I am the one talking and someone interrupts me.
8. Kids who try to act smart-aleck in class just to be funny.
This is especially bad because they are not funny, just annoying and rude.
9. The word sweet, only when used as a phrase.
10.People who run to see a fight
It happens everyday. Its NOT that exciting.
11. When everyone goes "ohhhh!" all together at lunch.
12. Loud music, especially in the car.
This is bad only when it prevents talking. I would like to have a good conversation without screaming.
Now I warn all my fellow peers not to let me catch you doing this. Because if I do, it may result in verbal attack.
Both sides now, pro: Should we go to war with Iraq?

November 22, 2002"War within a breath." Lyrics by Zack de la Rocha, formerly of Rage Against the Machine. Recently that line seems to be a true statement. Should we go to war? Yes, I think we should. Every time there is a war, our country prospers. Especially with our economy down so much, a war seems due.
Now don't get me wrong, I don't think war is good, but I do think it's appropriate when necessary. War is inevitable, it will always happen whether anyone wants it or not. The war with Iraq is very possible and with new weapons being used in war it is going to be very different than any other. Many people disagree with war and I sympathize with them, but in certain circumstances is has to be done. War is a horrible thing, people trying to kill other people. Most people obviously don't want it. But is it something that we can prevent?
The most that I can hope for is a quick resolution. The only think worse than a war is a war that doesn't stop. Personally, I don't have anything against Iraq, but if they pose as much a threat as President Bush says, I think we should solve the situation. If we go to Iraq, I think we should go with the intention of eliminating Saddam Hussein. There is something wrong with a guy who is the only person on an election ballot, then runs around with look a likes so as not to be spotted. Imagine if President Bush was going around with people looking just like him. That's just a little to scary to imagine.
So, should we go to war with Iraq? I think we should, and I think Hussein should be our target. Why else would we go there? It would probably be the best for the American public. So, who decides what's best for everyone? The government does, and they do it with only themselves in mind. People in America should have a say on what our country is going to do, but unfortunately we really don't. This just happens to be an issue I agree with the government on. The War on Terrorism has opened a new chapter and Iraq is on it. The only unfortunate thing about it is the soldiers who end up having to go to war. I truly feel sorry for the soldiers who are taken away from their homes and have to go halfway across the world to start someone elses battle, but then I just think of the fact that they are there because they want to be. War is never good and never sleeps.

November 22, 2002War is war, yes! But whatever happened to hanging people or chopping off heads, cutting off fingers and tongues ? It's all played out and too old to keep around, just like war. It's so senseless to fight and put many people in jeopardy of their lives, when the bottom line is that its just a way of saying we're better (but that's if we win the war.)
You see, if we go to war then simply we win, take pride, and get big headed; but we then half to keep our eyes open to look out for retaliation. We could have another day of September 11 or even a week of it, with a consequence of many U.S. prideful citizens dying. But hey, at least we won war, right?
Now if we don't go to war, besides the fact that we are following all laws, we as U.S. citizens are the bigger/ better country to withhold against Iraq. With much pride we pretty much win this whole decision of war by not going, by just being and example to Iraq and the other countries around us.
If we do attack Iraq, it would resolve in attack with the charter or the United Nations, causing the states to be in violation of several provisions starting with article 1, section 4, witch implies: "All members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state…" We as representatives of the U.S. should show our leadership that by not engaging in war, it shows our pride, dignity, and most of all our power to be able to withhold against Iraq. If people in combat are wiling to take that 50/50 percent chance on living or dying, that's their choice, but it is said that 90% of deaths during war are civilians who are not willing to take that 50/50 percent chance. Its really not fair, is it?
To be real about the whole war thing we pretty much all know that our country, the U.S. is going to have a big problem because of the fact that yes we are ready for war as far as technology. We have the latest equipment as far as bombs, missiles, tanks, choppers, planes, and most of all the dedicated people of our country who are ready to represent for the U.S. But little by little things are honestly going to happen because you can't expect to go into war and not expect nothing to happen to us. Therfore we are going to have to face some problems. Are We ready?
Physical Education… who needs it?

November 22, 2002Running in the rain and exercising in the heat. Can you guess what class this is? If you guessed P.E you were correct. Most students at Colton High probably have thought to themselves why do we have to take this class and why is it a graduation requirement?
Then there are other students who wish they could take P.E all day long. Brenton Manuel, a sophomore at Colton High, said "[I like P.E.] because of all the physical action and its my favorite period of the day." Freshman Britney Kinefelter had opposite feelong and said "[I don't like P.E.] because sometimes we have to do things we really don't want to and if the grass gets wet we fall in the mud holes when we're running."
I feel that both answers share some truth however I feel that P.E should not be graduation requirement. It should be an elective or a class taken by choice of the students who know they will do well in this class. P.E is a class which seems like nothing is really learned besides working well with others, staying in shape and learning to "run faster from the cops when your older and the police are chasing you" jokes Kinefelter.
P.E may keep students in shape but some students are not as active as others. Those who are not end up being the ones who do poorly in this class and who may even fail. This is unfair and should not be the reason why they can not graduate. Receiving a diploma should not be based on who can run faster or jump higher but rather on what they have learned.
All in all I felt that P.E should not be a required class but instead be an elective.
Subs: Dream come true; or worst nightmare?

November 22, 2002We've all had one at one time or another: the "sub from hell." Just how hard is it to be a substitute teacher?
Generally speaking, teachers tend to have impeccable attendance. Occasionally a day off is desired, family emergencies come up, and even educators catch the common cold some times. It is times like these when subs come in. Yes, substitute teachers. A classes' dream come true, yet possibly their worst nightmare as well?
Personally, I consider some substitutes to be my heroes. Their presence can postpone tests, quizzes, and even the submission of homework. As everything does, this too has a balance. While yes, subs can make my day a little bit better with their lax classroom rules, the downside of that is most are pretty clueless when it comes to helping students with the current assignment. Though they can be useful, normally I don't trust them to safely deliver my class or homework to my regular teachers.
Substitutes are notorious for their loss of work, inability to get the classes attention during roll, and the usual incapability of obtaining descent class control throughout the day. A small number of substitutes overreact and end up without the respect of the class. When a sub tries too hard to get the class to listen and do their work, it is then they lose the revere of the students. I know that I do my best to be respectful as well as manage to get my work done, while other students see the teachers' absence as an opportunity to misbehave and torment an adult. Personally, substitutes are a bit of all right in my book. Truth be told, some students see them as burdens.
Every story has two sides. Some substitutes see students simply as the kids they are. Many substitutes treat the students as children or even animals at times. Lack of discipline in the classroom can lead to some outrageous behavior on both parts. Subs feel the need to raise their voices, referrals are issued, campus supervisors are called, and bad reports are left for the regular teacher, usually not naming the names of the perpetrators leaving the entire class guilty of misconduct. Try as they might, some subs just can't get the students to cooperate. Frustration and dissatisfaction plague the substitute, especially when students don't give the sub their attention as well as respect.
Yes, some substitutes can make a day away from the teacher a bit more comfortable and enjoyable, while some are capable of making it a class period in agony. As for me, I prefer to cooperate and let them think they are in charge, permitting me to have a decent break from my usual teachers.

November 22, 2002Every year on thanksgiving families all around America get together and celebrate the day to give thanks. Over the years families have been developing traditions that are meant to last for generations. No matter what the tradition it's meant to be kept and to be enjoyed.
Many students here at Colton High when they were asked what their tradition was just said, " We just eat." Others said, " I don't know. We eat turkey I guess." Yet others had some interesting traditions. Here are what several people responded when they were asked what is your thanksgiving tradition.
"I guess ever year my aunt comes and uncle come down and we eat pumpkin pie," said junior Jason Templeton.
"The whole family gets together and we eat turkey and pumpkin pie," said senior Dick Partida.
"My uncle comes from Barstow and we make it really special by making pumpkin and apple pie." said senior Joseph Acosta. "Then we go to my grandma's house. Then I try to get the wishbone, but I never get it I always get stuck with something else."
"We get together at my grandma's house and we have an eating contest. I always win because I'm fat," said junior Miguel Garcia.
"Every year we have this competion for the best turkey gravy," said English teacher Lucy Khairullah. ".My dad always talks about how his gravy is really bad even though his is always the best. If he ever thinks that some other person's gravy is better he'll try to find a way to win."
Then there are people who don't even celebrate Thanksgiving at all. Some people said that their family just orders pizza that day and watches the football games. Someone else said that their family doesn't like turkey so they eat two stuffed chickens instead. Yet whatever people do if it's making turkey sandwiches, or going to grandma's it is still your tradition so enjoy it, and eat lots of turkey!

November 22, 2002Do you ever wonder where to eat on Thanksgiving Day? I know I do. I know a way to save your mom,and maybe you, from standing in that hot kitchen with all those dirty dishes to wash. On Thanksgiving Day, Hometown Buffet is having a special dinner for you: the old good sliced of turkey, mashed potatoes, and corn, along with your other favorite thanksgiving trimmings. Low prices make this a deal, even for kids. They charge sixty cents per year of the child's age. For example if your child were ten years old, then it would cost you six dollars. There are locations in the city of Rialto on Valley Blvd. and in Redlands. Denny's on the other hand is having a special dinner, too. They are having good old turkey dinner, too. I wish I could give you a price, they say that they're not sure of the price yet. Although they are located right there on Valley Blvd. just down the street from our school. Sometimes having more than one option is good. Carrow's is another option for those who want a relief from the hot oven at home. They are having the good old fashioned turkey dinner for everyone to enjoy. The best part about these dinners is that, they are all located near by. Carrow's is located on Ninth Street and Valley Blvd.

November 22, 2002Are we cookin yet? Here are some fabulous Thanksgiving recipes to thrill those turkey challenged tastebuds this holiday weekend. Roll out some of these goodies and you'll have the whole clan singing your culinary praises. Just be sure to leave a little for you, the cook!
Baked Miniature Pumpkins
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Ready in: 25 minutesIngredients
1 small sugar pumpkin
1-teaspoon brown sugar
½ teaspoon butter
2 teaspoons ground cinnamonDirections
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. Cut off the top of the pumpkin and scrape out all the seeds. Place the butter or margarine and brown sugar inside the pumpkin and sprinkle with ground cinnamon. Put the pumpkin lid back on and place pumpkin in a baking pan with a little water in the bottom.3. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or until tender. These can also be baked in the microwave on high for about 10 to 15 minutes.Makes 1 serving
Apple Dip
Prep time: 5 minutes
Ready time: 5 minutesIngredients
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
½ cup brown sugar
1-tablespoon vanilla extractDirections
1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, brown sugar and vanilla. Mix well until all of the brown sugar has been blended into the cream cheese and vanilla. If the mixture is too runny for your taste, add a small amount of brown sugar to the mixture. If the mixture is too thick for your taste, add a small amount of vanilla extract.
Makes 4 servings
No-cook never-fail fudge
(THESE ARE THE BOMB)Prep time: 20 minutes
Ready time: 20 minutesIngredients
1 pound processed cheese food, cubed
1 pound butter
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
4 pounds confectioners' sugar
3 cups chopped walnuts
1-tablespoon vanilla extractDirections
1. Melt cheese and butter together in a nonstick saucepan; stir until smooth. Keep this mixture over a low heat. In a mixing bowl, sift confectioners' sugar and cocoa together until thoroughly mixed and no lumps remain.
2. Combine the sugar mixture with the melted butter and cheese. Stir until very smooth. Stir in nuts and vanilla. Press mixture into 2 lightly sprayed or buttered 9x13 inch pans; let cool until firm. Cut into small squares. This fudge can be frozen.Makes 40 servings (equivalent of three servings for Mr. Rainey....YIELD!!!)

Away from the sun cements 3 doors down's rep

November 22, 2002Stellar is what I considered Away From The Sun, 3 Doors Down's sophomore release. The guys of 3 Doors Down (Brad Arnold, lead vocals, Matt Roberts, guitarist, Todd Harrell, bassist, Chris Henderson, guitarist, and Daniel Adair, the newest drummer) have used their musical talents to create a unique sounding 12 track follow up to their 6 million dollar debut The Better Life back in 2000.
Away From The Sun began once the guys returned home from world tours. At the bands website www.3doorsdown.com, Arnold commented, "I came home (from touring) and didn't listen to any music at all. I had to let my head stop spinning. It was like I had been going 90 miles per hour for so long, and then it all came to an instant stop." It wasn't until four months had past the boys by that they had started to hunger for music yet again. The five band members rented a house and used only a few hours out of each day to try and generate some new sound. They really didn't want the new stuff to appear "forced."
The first single off of Away From The Sun to be released is "When I'm Gone." This is a song with a lot of distinctive guitar riffs, and extremely memorable lyrics. This single is getting massive amounts of radio air-play across the USA, and was rated #1 Most Added at Mainstream, Modern and Active Rock.
The mixture of melodic guitars, burly drums, and stupefying lyrics make Away From The Sun an instant hit not only with radio stations, and critics, but the fans that were awaiting this CD as well.
Eminem makes the crossover to Hollywood

November 22, 2002Eminem gets his shot, his opportunity, and doesn't let it slip in his groundbreaking phenomenon movie, "8 Mile." The movie, that stars Marshall "Eminem" Mathers (Jimmy "Rabbit" Smith, Jr.), Mekhi Phifer (Future), Brittany Murphy (Alex) and Kim Basinger (Stephanie), has had people of all ages lining up this weekend. A story in the LA Times tells that two 73 and 72 old women saw the movie and quoted, "Eminem is a doll." The movie even had more than enough of under-aged kids trying to sneak in or get someone 17 or older to buy their tickets. Some were successful, but very few from what I saw. "8 Mile" had the second-best opening weekend ever for an R-rated film, behind 2001's box office smash, "Hannibal."
The story is about a struggling rap artist named Jimmy Smith, Jr., who goes by his nickname, Bunny Rabbit, that is trying to make it big in the rap industry with the help of his friend, Future, who hosts the battling competitions at a place called The Shelter. After Rabbit and his girlfriend break up he is forced to move in with his mother and her new boyfriend in the trailer park. Rabbit and his friends all share the same nemeses that call themselves the 'Free World.' The 'Free World' are a gangster rap group that shut down Rabbit on the mic and beat him down in the streets. In the mean time Rabbit is trying to fix his relationship with his trailer park mother and start a new one with a love interest, Alex, who is drawn to Rabbit's ability to flow. With everyone doubting his rapping skills because of the color of his skin, B. Rabbit is inspired by his friends and new girlfriend to take his one shot at shutting down the Free World, breaking into the rap scene, and most importantly, proving himself and everyone else wrong.
"8 Mile" is definitely worth seeing! Myself and everyone else in the theater were amazed by Eminem's breakthrough film debut. Eminem has a passion for his past struggles in Detroit and expresses it in this movie with compelling acting skills. Colton falls in league title game to San Gorgonio, 24-21

November 22, 2002Colton High School's football team faces Corona tonight in the CIF playoffs, heading into the postseason with a overall record of 6-3-1. Even with last Friday's unfortunate defeat, they still managed to get a home game in the first round.. This game will be the first time Colton has hosted the CIF playoffs since the early 90s.
Before the game last Friday against San G started the Yellowjackets had a nice hearty Burger King meal. In their locker room they got their hype going with rocking music and some inspirational words from their coach Harold Strauss: "No matter what happens, enjoy." After praying, they were finally ready to go out and bash some skulls. They got in their individual kickoff positions and then the game started with San G. receiving the ball first. But first blood was taken by fullback, RasBowen, who made the first touchdown of thegame on a punt return. Colton tied the game 14-14 during the first quarter with Brian Sorenson scoring with a pass from quarterback Robby Pope, who made a two-yard conversion run. But then during the second quarter, San G came back with a vengeance by scoring a field goal kick taking the lead for the first half 17-14. In the 3rd quarter Bowen was removed from the playing field due to a cramp in the right leg , but returned to the huddle to finish out the game. With Colton being behind they caught an interception which would later be taken to the goal line by Alex Bradford followed by a stunning field goal kick by Pope, but it wasn't enough. The Yellowjackets tried their best throughout the game, but were soon brought to a close with the final score 24-21, leaving San G. as league champions. Strauss told reporters after the game, "I take my hat off to them, they played a great game and they deserve it. We just made too many mistakes. But we'll be playing next week and a lot of other teams won't." He believes that the team is prepared for this coming game against Corona and that they would leave that game victorious.
Tonight's game against Corona means more to the team because they feel that they have a better shot at winning. This game will determine whether or not they remain in the standings for the championship that Pope says, "I've been wanting it since my freshman year, I want it bad." They have been studying the Corona team and feel ready for what will be coming their way. Since that it is a home game Pope feels that there will be a big outcome of public supporters
